Disney Princess 5 Piece Kids Camping Set Review

Disney Princess 5 Piece Kids Camping SetThe picture implies that this tent comes with a chair, sleeping bag and an air mattress. This is FAR from the truth. The chair and air mattress are NOT included. The reason we purchased this item is that it appeared to be a really great deal for everything that came with it. I feel that for what we ACTUALLY got, we could have found a better price from somewhere else.

ABO Gear Junior Tripod Tent (8- x 8- x 6.5-Feet) Review

ABO Gear Junior Tripod Tenti ordered this item and immediatlty requested to know if it was in stock or back order like every other site out there. even thoguht amazon claimed it was in stock and would ship in a few days. after i placed the order the ship date changed dramatically. and it was too late.I tried to contact the vendor for status and no one responded. i tried to cancel my order several times and was not allowed as it was not direct from amazon. i was told i needed the vendor to cancel it.itried over and over, no one responded, no one confirmed the order...i do not trust this vendor and would never order again. to this day i have not heard back. i took a chance and ordered from someone who i checked with to make sure it was in stock after 2 weeks of not hearing back from anyone and it was sent out the same day. do not order from them. i like the item once i received from someone is stock.

Coleman Marker Light (2-pack, Green) Review

Coleman Marker Light.... not a flashlight or lantern of some sort. No, you're not going to be able to read by this tiny single-LED light. What these marker lights are great for is precisely that: marking people, pets and objects you want to be able to locate in the dark. There is no spike on this item. There is instead a little clothespin-type clamp (and tiny tie-ring) that allows you to easily affix them to backpacks, tent peaks and guylines, your dog's collar or kids' beltloops. We use them to mark the stakes of our mess fly, so at night members of our party don't trip on the staked guylines, or worse, like stepping on a stake in bare feet. (Ouch!) In the woods, clip a few to the tops of your tents to help find your way "home" in the dark.

The picture in the description is close to life-size. These things weigh almost nothing, and so are backpack-friendly. They are visible from a good 1000 feet away, line of sight. I'm buying more!

MSR Skinny One Tent 1-Person 3-Season Review

MSR Skinny One Tent 1-Person 3-SeasonI'm an avid motorcyclist, and I was looking for a small tent to throw in my saddle bag so that I could camp at motorcycle rallies. This tent did not disappoint (and great price).

I'm 6'2, 190 pds, and there was plenty of of room for me and my sleeping bag, along with room in the dry storage in the front for my helmet, motorcycle jacket, and boots. While I was camping, it rained like crazy, and super high winds (sever thunderstorm all night long), and I woke up dry, along with all of the gear in my tent. I was pleasantly surprised. This tent is also EXTREMELY easy to setup and break down. Can be done n less than 5 minutes. I would highly recommend this tent to anyone!

ABO Gear Summer Habitat Tent (11.8- x 10- x 6.5-Feet) Review

ABO Gear Summer Habitat TentI bought this because we live in southern California and I was sick of dealing with an umbrella on our windy beaches. This tent goes up quickly and packs up quickly. The pockets on the side filled with sand easily keep the tent in place and are no problem to empty when you're ready to go.The shades allow you to see out, but keep the area inside the tent nice and cool. You can leave the zipper front open for a breeze or close it up to block most of the wind.Fits three adults laying down very comfortably and there's no stooping down because the tent is nice and tall.My one complaint is that bugs fly in and then can't figure out how to leave. They gather along the screen, so they aren't a nuisance - just kind of gross. We have gotten many compliments on the tent and I'm looking forward to a nice summer on the beach because of it.Highly recommended!

Coleman Insta-Clip 4 Sided Screen House Review

Coleman Insta-Clip 4 Sided Screen HouseI have used 6 of these screenhouses in the past 2 years for some agricultural field experiments. This was not normal use and they received a lot of abuse, but mostly the tents stood up to the challenge.I put them up in mid-June and they were up through late August. They lasted those few months, even in some very severe winds.Instead of using the wimpy metal stakes included with the package, I pounded rebars into the ground (at the angle of the hollow support poles) and pushed the poles onto the rebars. This really stabilized the tents.

The other reviewer here mentioned that the support poles are made of a soft steel and don't hold up very well. This is very true. The poles are in pieces and fit together to form 4 long support pieces that clip into an "x" at the top of the tent. However, many of the pieces crimped and bent at the bend in the upper corners of the tent. This made some of the tents kind of wonky-looking and unstable. It also weakened the fabric at these points, since the tab/clip part was stressed due to the instability of the supports. The bent pieces also made it nearly impossible to disconnect the support pieces. This was not a problem for me since I left the tents up permanently, but would be aggravating for a family or individuals trying to put up/take down the screenhouse several times.

The picture and description is not entirely clear about the bottom of the screenhouse. Please note that there is no "bottom" fabric inside; it even appears this way on the photo on the package.Instead, there are blue tarp-type flaps attached to the bottom of each side. This was great for me, since I was in a cornfield and could pile dirt on the flaps to prevent insects and rodents from getting in.If you will have this up for any length of time, you may want to put some heavy objects on the flaps.

The setup is very easy once you get the hang of it.I strongly recommend setting the screenhouse up with 2 adults, particularly if it's windy. The support pole clips are sometimes difficult to snap into the "x" on the tent top, but eventually they go in.Even though the sides are mesh, they really do keep the bugs out (I was doing research on bugs, so I know!) and the mesh never ripped even with several people going in/out daily. The zippers never failed to work, even when they were dirty.

Each tent also comes in a sturdy blue fabric tote. The stakes (metal and plastic) come in bags to keep them together.I didn't have too much difficulty stuffing everything back in the tote.

I am giving this four stars for 2 reasons:
1) The screenhouses did last a long time, even in harsh weather with a lot of dust and abuse.
2) The customer service people at Coleman were very nice and shipped me replacement support poles free of charge when they bent.

If you have problems with the supports, I recommend calling the company directly (there is a slip inside the package with their number and warranty info) to ask about replacements.I had no problem with their customer service.

Kelty Palisade 4-Person Tent Review

Kelty Palisade 4-Person TentThe Kelty Palasaide was the second tent that I received from Kelty.I had purchased the Kelty Villa 4 this year (2010) and when I set it up I came to find out that is was defective.I called the warranty department at Kelty and they were really great. They had me setup the Villa Tent one additional time and then had me send a photo of the 3 inched of space under the floor.Being that the Villa 4 tent was from 2007 and discontinued they offered the Palisade as replacement.I was sold on the vestibule just from the website.

We are planning a trip next week to Sedona and as a test run we set the tent up in our living room. The main part of the tent went up supper easy - the circular pole was an interesting puzzle to figure out and using my 6 year old daughter as a brace we managed to get the tent up. I can honestly say that I could set up the entire tent by myself. As for the circular pole for the roof, I think a tree, car or anything stationary will work just fine if you are setting it up by yourself.

There are a few issues that I have with the tent....

1. Staking the Tent is a Must - The tent definitely needs to be staked to the ground. We go beach camping Palisade offers great ventilation in 80 degree Arizona evenings - finding a way to stake it in the sand will challenging.

2. Lack of Privacy. The Palisade is basically a bug shield without the rain fly.If you like a little privacy in a big campground you will need to attach the fly. Then you give up the awesome open roof and the star gazing that goes along with it.If you tend to do back country camping then the openness will not matter to much.

3. Pets Can Potentially Damage the Tent - We have a puppy we will be taking on our next camping trip and she already has come into the tent and made herself at home. The thing that concerns me is that if she wants out she can tend to scratch at the door.If she does with this tent the mesh will not last.

The Really positive things about the tent....

1. A BIG stuff sack - When we opened the box we found ample room in the duffle bag to account for non-professional packing.

2. A Star Gazing Roof to die for - My daughter and I laid down in the tent and looked up at the ceiling in our living room and the first thing she said was wow we can sure see a lot of shooting stars in this tent!!!!

3. Super Easy to Setup and Take Down - I could do it myself!

4. Large with Vertical Walls - We like to sleep with big comfy cots and both fit in just nicely. If you wanted a third cot it could get a little tight.Four cots would definably not fit.

5. Vestibule and Rainfly is really cool! - Makes an extra room for you!(For it to work it needs to be staked to the ground!)

6. Great Customer Service - Kelty provides awesome customer support directly out of their Colorado office...

We will report back once we have a chance to test it in the field.

Wenzel Windsong 8- by 8-Foot Three Person Pentadome Tent Review

Wenzel Windsong 8- by 8-Foot Three Person Pentadome TentThis is a good tent for backyard camping: easy to put up and break down, roomy, and has good ventilation. However, water leaks through the rain fly during a heavy rain. The tent arrived with a part missing. However, I called the manufacturer, and it sent me the replacement part immediately.Excellent customer service.Considering how inexpensive it was, it's okay to treat this tent as fairly disposable, and I don't worry about my kid being too rough on it.I would purchase Wenzel products again.

Product Description:
This 8-foot x 8-foot, 6-inch, five-sided-dome tent with 50 inches of center head room accommodates three campers on a welded-polyethylene tub-style floor to keep out ground moisture and is made of rugged, weather-resistant polyester with a polyurethane coating for reliability. A removable fly with hoop frame over the D-style door keeps out rain. Double-stitched, lap-feld seams provide a shingle effect to prevent moisture seepage. A rain-shingle layer on the tent's lower portion provides a watershed effect. Other weather-resistant details include thread, zippers, and webbing treated with water repellents. Windows and roof are made of polyester mesh. A lightweight, shockcorded fiberglass frame has a clip-on system for quick set-up. The tent includes a gear loft for storage and has a 10-year warranty against defects.
Amazon.com Tent Guide
Selecting a Tent
Fortunately, there are all kinds of tents for weekend car campers, Everest expeditions, and everything in-between. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
Expect the Worst
In general, it's wise to choose a tent that's designed to withstand the worst possible conditions you think you'll face. For instance, if you're a summer car camper in a region where weather is predictable, an inexpensive family or all purpose tent will likely do the trick--especially if a vehicle is nearby and you can make a mad dash for safety when bad weather swoops in! If you're a backpacker, alpine climber or bike explorer, or if you like to car camp in all seasons, you'll want to take something designed to handle more adversity.
Three- and Four-Season Tents
For summer, early fall and late spring outings, choose a three-season tent. At minimum, a quality three season tent will have lightweight aluminum poles, a reinforced floor, durable stitching, and a quality rain-fly. Some three-season tents offer more open-air netting and are more specifically designed for summer backpacking and other activities. Many premium tents will feature pre-sealed, taped seams and a silicone-impregnated rain-fly for enhanced waterproofness.
For winter camping or alpine travel, go with a four season model. Because they typically feature more durable fabric coatings, as well as more poles, four-season tents are designed to handle heavy snowfall and high winds without collapsing. Of course, four-season tents exact a weight penalty of about 10 to 20 percent in trade for their strength and durability. They also tend to be more expensive.
Domes and Tunnels
Tents are broadly categorized into two types, freestanding, which can stand up on their own, and those that must be staked down in order to stand upright. Freestanding tents often incorporate a dome-shaped design, and most four-season tents are constructed this way because a dome leaves no flat spots on the outer surface where snow can collect. Domes are also inherently stronger than any other design. Meanwhile, many three-season models employ a modified dome configuration called a tunnel. These are still freestanding, but they require fewer poles than a dome, use less fabric, and typically have a rectangular floor-plan that offers less storage space than a dome configuration. Many one and two-person tents are not freestanding, but they make up for it by being more lightweight. Because they use fewer poles, they can also be quicker to set up than a dome.
Size Matters
Ask yourself how many people you'd like to fit in your fabric hotel now and in the future. For soloists and minimalists, check out one-person tents. If you're a mega-minimalist, or if you have your eye on doing some big wall climbs, a waterproof-breathable bivy sack is the ticket. Some bivy sacks feature poles and stake points to give you a little more breathing room. Also, if you don't need bug protection and you want to save weight, check out open-air shelters.
Families who plan on car camping in good weather can choose from a wide range of jumbo-sized tents that will accommodate all your little ones with room to spare. A wide range of capacities is also available for three- and four-season backpacking and expedition tents. Remember, though, the bigger the tent you buy, the heavier it will be, although it's easy to break up the tent components among several people in your group. It's also helpful to compare the volume and floor-space measurements of models you're considering.

PREMIER 4 PERSON DOME TENT Review

PREMIER 4 PERSON DOME TENTThis tent is very easy to set up, lots of headroom. Good for a day out of the sun. I tried to use it at halfmoon bay california this summer for the first time, the sea air sunk thru and soaked our pillows and sleeping bags during the night. One pole of the two was split in 3 ways. It turned out quite disappointing and a waste of money in my opinion. We had to throw it away like a used ziplock bag.. :(..

Kelty Nobendium II Tent Stakes Review

Kelty Nobendium II Tent StakesYour tent will most likely include a set of "skewer" stakes. Eventually you may lose some, bend them, break them or tire of always searching for just the right location to put your stake in the ground. The only justifiable reason for Kelty to sell these is because they are better than the cheap ones that come with the tent.

The material will take more pounding, the shaft is thicker and it has sides like a pencil; this makes the stake hold in the ground better and makes it sturdier yet they don't weigh a lot.

Of course, you don't need to rush right out and replace your originals, unless you broke, bent or lost yours. Before any of those bad things happens, you should consider these if you want the best shot at securing your tent to ground under less than ideal conditions.

Best of outdoor life to you.

Rothco Camouflage 2-Man Trail Tent Review

Rothco Camouflage 2-Man Trail TentI guess you really do get what you pay for.I bought this tent last year for around $45 to go camping for a week in the woods. The tent came with very cheap, flimsy shepherd crook stakes that aren't very effective, and the aluminum poles had a small plastic knob on the end to slip into a grommet on the tent. These knobs broke as soon as it was out of the box.I wound up just using two sticks, whittled down to fit the grommets. This would have been sufficient with better stakes. Also the tent was very cramped with just me and my pack.I suggest only using this as a solo tent. With decent tent stakes and better poles,it would be an affordable one man tent.

Disney Cars Complete Kids Camping Kit Review

Disney Cars Complete Kids Camping KitMy four year old son loves this!It was well worth the money! The tent got put up and didn't come down for a month. It was slept in every night and even a couple of naps.It was big enough to put a crib size mattress in.The tent is sturdy and the slumber bag is as nice as any we have purchased. It is not a bag for outdoor use.The tent was put away in perfect condition.I recommed this for any of your little CARS fans! The backpack and water bottle were a nice touch.I another tip I did put a little vaseline on the zipper and open and close it myself a couple of times. It just made it smoother and easier for him to open. The tent has a great window in the door.I just can't say enough about this product.

Sierra Designs Wu Hu Annex 6+2 Six-Person Basecamp Tent Review

Sierra Designs Wu Hu Annex 6+2 Six-Person Basecamp TentSierra Designs WuHu 6+2 Annex is a great tent!

I was a little worried before purchasing because of other reviews but once my tent got here those went away. The footprint and fly clip to the jakes feet along with the poles and although the jakes feet are plastic they are very sturdy and certainly capable of holding up to tensioning of the rainfly. Sierra Designs must have listened to complaints because the bedroom section now has attachments for attic as well as has pockets on wall. The tent is incredibly spacious and easy to set up and take down.

I set the tent up in 30 minutes alone except for the fly which I needed help to get over tent as it is taller than I am. The tent is incredible in the rain and wind. We had rain for 4 days and wind up to 40 mph on two different days. Not one drop of water inside and the tent withstood wind with hardly any movement. I had all 12 stakes in base and 6 guy lines hooked up. Ventilation is great even with the fly closed up thanks to vents in each fly door. On nice days the fly can be rolled back or removed for a great view of the stars. Everything including optional footprint fits in duffle style bag for transport.

This is just an incredible high quality tent for up to 8 and I highly recommend it!

Texsport Osprey Three Season Tent Review

Texsport Osprey Three Season TentIf you are not a frequent camper (like me) this is a good tent for the price. It pretty much does the job and looks good, I like the mesh windows but I do have three complaints.

1. Unless you have your tent pitched on some canvas (as my friends did) it is going to get wet in the rain. I thought having a rain fly would solve any weather issues but it definitely doesn't. My tent and everything in it was soaked after a storm. Maybe that's just me not being the most educated camper but again I thought that maybe they should tell you that.

2. The instructions are the worst. They just are. The only advice I can give you is to mark your poles with a waterproof pen after you first set it up because each one has to go in a specific place, in a specific order and they don't really tell you so the first time you really have to struggle through it.

3. There is no way this is a 3-man tent, it just isn't. At most you could get a couple in the tent but even then you are going to be quite crowded if you have anything more than a backpack with you.

Final thoughts... it did the job and I didn't spend a fortune so even with the 3 complaints above I feel like I got what I needed out of it.

Ephor 6 Person Family Camping Dome Tent Review

Ephor 6 Person Family Camping Dome TentLet me start by saying I sell outdoors and emergency supplies. I have tested tons of tents. We just purchased the Ephor 6 Tent from CEC last week. Immediately we packed up the tent and all of the rest of our camping gear and headed off to the Gila River in Winkelman, AZ to test it out for 5 days. The following is my review of our experience:

Ease of Setup:
I put the tent up with my wife and daughters (7 and 11 y.o.) in about 30 minutes without any mishaps at all. Be prepared though, there are a ton of guy lines that have to be staked down in addition to the tent corners, and I found that the tent will unfortunately not stand up without them.

Size and Comfort:
The tent was HUGE! It housed my wife and I, our 3 children (11, 7 and 2 y.o.) and 2 dogs for 5 days. The ventilation was sufficient when we opened the side vents to the living areas. We really enjoyed all the extra space that this tent provides. Each inner tent has ample space complete with several storage pockets. The queen sized, double height inflatable bed that my wife and I use fits perfectly in one of the inner tents. The center living area is very large and fit all of our supplies for the week with lots of extra room to spare.

Overall
The stitching and fabric are made from strong, durable materials, however a stake loop on the front of one inner tent broke completely free leaving a hole in it's place. I suspect this simply was not sewn in completely at the factory. This will need to be re-sewn right away otherwise water will find it's way into the "totally waterproof - fully sewn in ground sheet in the SLEEPING AREA". The tent poles are strong and thick as well as being color coded; together the poles alone weighed over 30 pounds so I expect they may be able to hold up a small car. The tent stood up to strong winds without any problem at all. The tent stakes were unfortunately not as advertised. The company website and instruction set advertises that the tent comes with 55 "durable zinc plated steel stakes" however mine came with 40 cheap plastic stakes that bend easily. I had to immediately spend over $50 to get reasonable tent stakes from a local outdoors shop because we were leaving the following morning and I did not have extras on hand.

Rain
Everything was great right up until the night good ole' Mother Nature decided to dump rain on us. All four sides of the blue rain fly on top filled with water immediately and the whole tent went down to about half height under the pressure. Then the water started coming in from all the vented areas that were meant to be covered by the blue fly. There is no attached floor under the main living area so water started coming in from everywhere on the ground. The description on the company website states the following about the living area floor:"A tub style, fitted, removable ground sheet in the LIVING AREA that is attached to the rain fly with the use of hooks and toggles" In reality I found that the "tub style" floor was just a regular tarp that you stake to the ground via the four corners, there were no hooks or toggles for connecting the floor to the rain fly. This is supported by the instructions that come with the tent.

Overall Opinion:
From what I have seen so far I really like the tents that Camping Equipment Company designs. If you are looking for a huge tent for your family and you camp in mild conditions this is the tent for you. If however you are looking for a tent for camping in areas that may experience heavy rains I suggest you look at another tent model. This is a large tent with lots of extra room for storage but as a result you might want to set it up a couple of times in the backyard to get familiar with it prior to taking it camping for the first time.Pros:
Huge tent. Lots of storage space. Assembles easily. Good quality materials. Good ventilation. Color coded tent poles and inner tent hooks/toggles. Large removable front dual screened/weatherproof door.

Cons:
Rain fly collects water. Cannot stand on it's own with poles and stakes, needs guy lines or it will fall down. No tub floor under living area as advertised. No zinc plated steel tent stakes as advertised. "Totally Waterproof" inner tent floors do not account for the possibility of tent loop coming free and exposing hole to floor.

Kelty Teton 4 Tent 4-Person 3-Season Review

Kelty Teton 4 Tent 4-Person 3-Season... with two kids, in a jungle in southern Madagascar.

We stayed dry. It rained torrentially for 11 days straight- and not a drop of water got inside the tent. Amazing! On dewy mornings, there was quite a bit of condensation on the bottom walls, but the air circulation through the mesh roof is excellent and the condensation lasts only an hour or so once the sun's up. We left our boots in the vestibule every night, and they were always dry in the morning, even after a gale.

The tent holds up well in strong winds. It was difficult to sleep through gales, though, because the vestibule does flap in very strong winds.

Malaria is a problem in the area we camped in, so I was concerned about the netting and whether mosquitoes could bite through the light fabric. I need not have worried. We used the vestibule as an `air lock'. Not one creepy crawly or mosquito got inside the tent over the course of a month.

I wouldn't call this a four-person tent. It's perfect for an adult and two small kids- I could fit my backpacker's cot, two air mattresses for the kids, and a month's worth of gear inside. You could fit four sleeping bags inside, head to tail like sardines, with no gear, but that's no way to live.

The tent's very easy to set up and take down; it takes 5-10 minutes for an adult, or 10-15 minutes with a ten year old helping you. I like the fly buckles on each corner of the tent, but wish Kelty had included an extra plastic buckle. We lost one the first time we set up the tent, and now have to knot the strap to hold the fly down.

The tent's very light, too- great for backpacking.

It's the best 3-season tent I've ever owned.

Coleman Montana Big Sky Elite Tent, 16'x7' Review

Coleman Montana Big Sky Elite Tent, 16'x7'After much research, we decided to purchase this tent to replace our older, smaller tent.We left on vacation shortly after receiving the Big Sky Elite, with only one trial set-up under our belts. The directions were a little vague, but my 14 year old son and I got it set-up in a matter of minutes. The interior is huge.We (2 adults, a 14 yr old and a 4 year old) had plenty of space to spread out.We had a queen size air mattress on one end and the boys had sleeping bags on the other. We had several feet in between for our bags, etc. It was great not having to crawl over anyone to go in and out the door. The light is wonderful. We were able to read with no problems, and it didn't show up super bright outside the tent.Thankfully, the bugs that it attracted weren't able to get into the tent. One night of our vacation it rained steadily. We only had a couple minor seam leaks. If the rain fly was a little larger, it would have taken some of the pressure off the seams. At times, the rain fly would catch so much water, then it would pour it right down the front of the tent.It sounded like it was pouring it right inside. The door was ok, but it could've been a little better. You have to get it just so for the velcro to hold it.There is also some confusion with the way the frame rod is zipped in the door.It is easy to mistakenly get ahold of the wrong zipper when trying to get in the door.
Overall, we had a very good experience with our new Coleman Montana Big Sky Elite tent.We camped for 4 nights near Glacier National Park inMontana and it worked out very well for our family. We give it a solid 4 stars and would recommend it to anyone.

Sierra Designs Meteor Light 6 Person Tent (Spring 2010) Review

Sierra Designs Meteor Light 6 Person TentThe quality of this tent is on par with what you would expect from one designed for backcountry enthusiasts. You can't find that attention to detail in most 6 man tents. Nothing bad to say about it. I have a family of four, we wanted room to grow and have more than enough with this tent. Interior mesh pockets everywhere. Room enough to stand. The panoramic view from our backs was the nicest surprise. Love it! if you are car camping with kids this is a must have.

Wenzel Nova Sport 6- by 5-Foot Two-Person Dome Tent Review

Wenzel Nova Sport 6- by 5-Foot Two-Person Dome TentIt's a fabulous sunny-weather tent, realtively cozy for two persons of average size and weight....but when it rains it POURS.It LEAKS through every cross-hatched weave of thread it's made of. You'll scream like I screamed, curse like the sailor you will be whilst drifting about, angrily wondering why you decided to let your desire to save a little dough has literally drowned you in sorrow.....and it wasn't even a heavy rain.Alas.

Product Description:
Nicely lightweight and easy to set up and breakdown, the sporty Wenzel Nova dome-style tent is a great choice for a weekend car camping outing. It features a single room that measures 6 by 5 feet, and a 38-inch maximum height. It has a half-circle door with a mesh window covering half of it (and an interior zippered closure) as well as a three-quarter vented dome with no-see-um mesh. The interior is quite spare, with only a small gear pocket in one corner near the door.
Set up was easy, for the most part, and we erected the tent (with its two shock-corded fiberglass poles) in under five minutes. The one impediment to an even faster assembly was the heavy-duty nylon corner pockets that secure the poles, which included a polyester-reinforced interior flap that's not seamed at the top of the entry. Thus, we had a tougher time than we should have trying to make correct purchase with the pocket, continually hitting the space between the nylon pocket and the interior poly pocket.
But we could forgive this slight design flaw for such a nicely light and easily backpacked tent. However, it should be noted that this tent isn't suited to an all-out assault by rain, with just a small rain cover (instead of a full fly) to protect the dome's three-quarter-ventilated square, which is quickly attached using integrated plastic hooks. That said, the water-resistant polyester exterior (polyester utilizing Wenzel's Weather Armor coating) will shed drizzle and light rain (tested under our extended sprinkler test in our backyard) and keep you warm and protected inside. It also features a heavy-duty nylon floor with taped seams.
If you're an occasional camper who sticks with fair-weather weekends, the Wenzel Nova is a fine, affordable choice for camping duos. --Agen G.N. Schmitz

ALPS Mountaineering Zephyr 1.0 1-Person 3-Season Tent Review

ALPS Mountaineering Zephyr 1.0 1-Person 3-Season TentOn the advice of someone who owns a fleet of tents for commercial use I purchased this tent from the Alps Company. It was about $80 less than comparable freestanding solos from MSR, Big Agnes, and Mountain Hardwear. Despite the price difference, this tent is of the same quality as far as materials, workmanship, and design go. I was under the impression that Alps just copied others designs and that they saved their money in R&D. But this tent disproves that. The design is extremely practical. They took a simple timeless design with the two crossing poles and made a huge improvement to it just by adding an elbow resulting in more headroom where your head goes rather than in the middle of the tent where it is wasted. The innovative designs of the MSR Hubba or BA Seedhouse are great, but I really think this more basic modification performs equally as well. I know MSR used to provide the 3-sided stakes with some of their tents and that may be the only thing that is clearly superior to this Alps, which just provides your basic aluminum needle stakes.

The Zepyr 1 is roomier than I expected. Though you couldn't fit 2 sleeping bags side by side but I do think you could sleep two friendly people in here on a dry night. The Zephyr narrows slightly at the feet and leaves plenty of room for one person and some belongings. The vestibule is smaller than expected but should be adequate for a single pack. The Zephyr 1 requires the fly to have two included 12 inch guy wires attached to the bottom of the fly on each side in order to pull the fly from the body. With these in tack the fly did not touch the body anywhere, clearing by an average of about 2 inches. The poles have male fitting on the end and slide through eyelets attached to webbing on each corner. Fly attaches to each corner with adjustable side release buckles. A two piece spreader pole fits in above the door. Alps thoughtfully used a smaller diameter pole for this as it is non load bearing.

My first night in the Zephyr it rained lightly (1/2 of an inch in about 3 hours) and I stayed completely dry. This was in central Florida where humidity is high and condensation occurs every morning. I could feel only the slightest amount of moisture in the cotton teeshirt that was acting as my pillow. There was a bit of water pooling in the triangle created by the intersecting main poles and the spreader bar (maybe 10 mL), but nothing to be concerned about.

In sum, this has surpassed my expectations and it is definitely comparable to the products of the big gear companies. A bit heavier than a Big Agnes Seedhouse SL or a MSR Hubba but cost is 70% and 60% less respectively. I am convinced the price differential is not due to quality or R&D, but is instead due to the advertising campaigns of MSR, The North Face, and even Big Agnes these days. When you buy a Hubba you are paying for 2 page spreads in Outside and Backpacker. I will buy Alps again.

Product Description:
There are some serious benefits to tenting alone. For one, a single-person tent weighs a lot less than a two-person tent. You also don't have to worry about getting steam-rolled at four AM or warding off your homesick tentmate's wandering hands. At under four pounds, the Alps Mountaineering Zephyr 1.0 Tent barely affects the scales, but offers heavy-duty protection against bugs and wet weather. All-mesh walls guarantee ventilation during muggy summer nights, while the urethane-coated, seam-sealed fly blocks precipitation. Eureka K-2 XT 8'11-Foot by 7'8 -Foot Three-Person Four-Season Expedition Tent Review

Eureka K-2 XT 8'11-Foot by 7'8 -Foot Three-Person Four-Season Expedition TentThis has to be my favorite Eureka 4-season tent. If I only had one tent for everything (yeah, right!), this would be the one. The geodesic dome shape (4 aircraft aluminum poles) is incredibly strong...maybe the strongest of all tent designs. Ripstop fabric with extra waterproof coating will stop rain, snow and ice and the unique guy-line arrangement gives me some flexibilty when anchoring this tent. Like my Alpenlite 2XT, this tent comes with two vestibules and the rear vesti can be accessed from inside the tent via a second/back door. I wasn't sure about all the vents at first but I'm finding that they make the tent a good choice for warmer weather, too! I've posted a bunch of pictures for this tent so take a look. If there is a down side to this tent...it's a bit heavy for a backpack. The fix for this?...I fall back on Boy Scout training and divide the components. I'll carry the tent body and my friend Sharon Sharalike gets the rainfly, poles and stakes. An outstanding tent!!!

About Eureka
Though the exact year is unknown, Eureka's long history begins prior to 1895 in Binghamton, New York, where the company still resides today. Then known as the Eureka Tent & Awning Company, its first wares were canvas products--most notably, Conestoga wagon covers and horse blankets for nineteenth century American frontiersmen--as well as American flags, store awnings, and camping tents.
The company increased production of its custom canvas products locally throughout the 1930s and during the 1940 and even fabricated and erected the IBM "tent cities" just outside Binghamton. The seven acres of tents housed thousands of IBM salesmen during the company's annual stockholders meeting, which had since outgrown its previous locale. In the 1940s, with the advent of World War II and the increased demand for hospital ward tents, Eureka expanded operations and began shipping tents worldwide. Ultimately, upon the post-war return of the GIs and the resultant housing shortage, Eureka turned its attention to the home front during the 1950s by supplying awnings for the multitude of mobile homes that were purchased.
In 1960, Eureka's new and innovative Draw-Tite tent, with its practical, free standing external frame, was used in a Himalayan Expedition to Nepal by world renowned Sir Edmund Hillary, the first person documented to summit Mt. Everest only six years earlier. In 1963, Eureka made history during its own Mt. Everest ascent, with more than 60 of its tents sheltering participants from fierce 60+ mph winds and temperatures reaching below -20°F during the first all American Mt. Everest Expedition.
For backpackers and families, Eureka introduced its legendary Timberline tent in the 1970s. Truly the first StormShield design, this completely self-supporting and lightweight backpacking tent became one of the most popular tents the entire industry with sales reaching over 1 million by its ten year anniversary.
Eureka tents have also traveled as part of several historic expeditions, including the American Women's Himalayan Expedition to Annapurna I in 1978 and the first Mt. Everest ascents by a Canadian and American woman in 1986 and 1988. In recent history, tents specially designed and donated by Eureka sheltered Eric Simonson and his team on two historic research expeditions to Mount Everest, this time in a quest for truth regarding the 1924 attempted summit of early English explorers George Mallory and Andrew Irvine. During the 1999 expedition, the team made history finding the remains of George Mallory, but the complete mystery remained unsolved. Returning in 2001 to search for more clues, the team found amazing historical artifacts which are now on display at the Smithsonian.

Coleman 12-Inch Metal Tent Stakes (4-Pack) Review

Coleman 12 inch Metal Tent StakesJust bought these a few weeks ago (12 stakes total - 3 sets) for a trip to Joshua Tree, CA.Just returned, in the semi-hard desert sand ALL of them started bending when tapped in (using rubber mallet first, then hammer).8 of them bent 90 degrees at the head.Ended up using the smaller, standard stakes that came with the tent.Very disappointed, as the standard stakes with the plastic tops snap easily as well, but at least the metal parts remain straight and still usable.

Texsport Privacy Shelter w/Shower Review

Texsport Privacy Shelter w/ShowerReceived as a gift and used with a Zodi camp shower system rather than the solar shower bag included.Pluses are low cost and simplicity.Minuses are:

1) not self supporting.need to find something to hang it from at an appropriate height
2) low end construction. One of the loops holding the material sides went right out of the box due to a sewing flaw.

So overall...good if all you want to spend is $30 and basically want something for one or two seasons then throw away.If you want something self supporting look elsewhere.
