Black Diamond Gizmo Headlamp Review

Black Diamond Gizmo HeadlampThis is a fantastic headlamp. Besides this headlamp, I also own the Black Diamond Zenix IQ.However, I find myself using the Gizmo 99% of the time however. The reasons I prefer the Gizmo are as follows:
- the Gizmo weighs significantly less than the Zenix IQ
- unlike the Zenix IQ, the Gizmo does *not* have a battery pack in the back of the strap....making the Gizmo perfect for use as a reading lamp while laying in bed.
- the Gizmo is more compact (and lighter), making it easier to carry in a pocket and/or to carry with you in a backpack for "just in case I need a headlamp" situations.

Although I would still recommend the Zenix IQ as a great headlamp for long hikes (provides more output light when you really need to see distances for unknown terrain), I find that I use my Gizmo 99% of the time because in its low-output mode it is the perfect reading lamp and in its high-output mode it provides plenty of light for walking around a campsite, etc.

Princeton Tec Fuel Headlamp Review

Princeton Tec Fuel HeadlampI have owned this light for about 4 months, and have really liked having it. I ordered it because it had high ratings on REI's website, and it looked sturdy (I really dislike headlamps that lose the ability to stay pointed the direction you set them at). I have used it to ride my bike in the dark, hike, and read books after my wife goes to bed. It works great for all applications. The pivot works great, and doesn't show any signs of losing its grip. The different light settings are great for different situations. The Fuel is inexpensive, but worth the money. I even saw a review of the Tactikka Plus (Petzl) where someone switched and liked this lamp a lot more. This is a great lamp for anyone, and at the price, you could have two for the price of other comparable models. Would recommend to anyone.

Apex Pro, Black Review

Apex Pro, Black*** New Model Alert! ***

There is a new model revision, which DOUBLES the light output from 60 lumens (which is good out to +/- 70yards) to 130 Lumens (good out to +/- 120yrds). This goes for all apex models (the AA model, the CR123 model here and the external battery pack model)

As of December '08, there are a lot of resellers trying to dump the older model, which are selling in the $60-$70 price range. The newer model is selling for around $90. If a reseller's advertisement doesn't list it as the "New 130 Lumen" model, then it probably isn't. The only way to determine which version you are holding in your hand is to look for the "130 Lumen" sticker on the retail box, and the model number, which is now "APXR" (it was APX on the older model).

Here is a link to Princeton Tec's current Apex page: http://www.princetontec.com/?q=node/68

If you can't find the new one here at Amazon, check out Lighthound.

IMO, Spend the extra $20 to get the higher Lumen model. It will allow you to leave you high-output flashlight at home and just use this light for all your daily outdoor adventure needs. With the older model, I always carried a second flashlight of at least 120 Lumens (preferably around 200) for long range spotlight needs. This new model takes care of almost all my spot needs now, so it really does double duty and is well worth the extra $20 or so.

As for which model to get (AA or CR123), it comes down to if you have any other CR123 flashlights (I have 5 of them), or if you are weight sensitive (this one is light, the AA model is kind of heavy!). If I didn't have any other CR123 devices, I'd probably live with the weight of the AA model, since you can buy bulk AA's at Costco or Sam's Club for very cheap.

Click me if this info helps! thanks.

Princeton Tec EOS LED Headlamp Review

Princeton Tec EOS LED HeadlampThe center portion of the beam isridiculously tight and nonadjustable. I am going to rig up a diffuser to make this lamp appropriate for close-up task lighting but one should be integrated.
Kudos to Princeton Tec for making an affordable regulated waterproof 1 watt headlamp, though. Everything else is A-OK.

UPDATE: search online for "modified Princeton Tec Eos" to find out how to change the LED in this headlamp to one with more light spill so it doe3snt look as much like a spotlight. the new led is more efficient and runs cooler as well. This mod combined with freshly charged 2700mah rechargeable batteries makes this headlamp perform very very well at a price that can't be beat.

Black Diamond Cosmo Headlamp Review

Black Diamond Cosmo HeadlampI have owned this headlamp for 6 months. I use it at my mountain cabin where it is sometimes pitch dark. I cannot say enough good things about how it brightens the night. I use the low setting for around the campfire or for house hold chores. The high setting single beam throws light clearly for about 80 yds. I use it for night hiking. Some headlights reflect down into the eyes of the user this one does not. I am buying a few more of these as I have need in my car and around the home, it is 1000x better than a flashlight. Great unit!!!

Princeton Tec Yukon HL 3 LED Hybrid Headlamp (Blue) Review

Princeton Tec Yukon HL 3 LED Hybrid HeadlampThis recent purchase was for a gift. I have had mine for about 2 years with almost daily use -- doing maintenance around my (rural) property -- yard work and equipment usage and maintenance. It is very reliable under hot, cold and wet conditions. I use the low beam (3 LED) most often. However, it does not take long for the light output of the 3 LED to get noticeably weaker using alkaline batteries. The high output long range single LED seems to last longer even when the 3 LED light is diminished. I've switched to NiMH rechargeables which serves me better since I can charge the batteries often (and not have to put up with using the weaker light output until I had close to exhausted the alkalines). As for maintenance of this headlamp, I occasionally wash and submerge the whole flashlight in a sink to clean the straps.(I wish the straps were removable so I can just put them in the washer.)Recently, one of the 3 LEDs started to blink (like a strobe light) and then died.I sent it back to Princeton Tec and they sent me a new one immediately.I am quite pleased with this flashlight.

Product Description:
The first of its kind L.E.D. hybrid headlamp, the Yukon HL employs the advanced technology of a state-of-the-art, 1-watt L.E.D. and 3 high-output, 5-millimeter L.E.D.s. When you need extreme brightness and distance that rivals the high output typical to incandescent halogen and xenon bulbs, flip on the 1-watt L.E.D. With the quick press of a button, you can switch to the 3 L.E.D.s, configured in a unique triangular design for when you require long burn time for close-up applications.
From Backpackgeartest.org
Before I attempt to describe the headlamp a few words on L.E.D.s are in order. L.E.D. stands for light emitting diode. Doing a quick search on L.E.D. lights will render lots of information beyond the scope of this report. But in a nutshell, L.E.D.s feature long bulb life and much longer burn time when compared to normal incandescent bulbs, which means less frequent bulb and battery replacement...read the entire review

Princeton Tec Vortec 4AA Halogen Headlamp (Granite) Review

Princeton Tec Vortec 4AA Halogen HeadlampThis is a very solid headlamp. It is bright. It is substantially well made. I believe it is waterproof. It turns on with a simple twist of the wrist to the right, and turns off with a twist to the left. You twist the black part. There is no adjusting the width of the beam. It is a narrow beam and twisting it on further doesn't seem to do anything at all. This is the way I like it so it is perfect for me. Other headlamps start narrow and adjust wide, or start wide and adjust narrow. Not this one, just narrow. The straps are very strong. I really like my Vortec.
