Black Diamond Gizmo Headlamp Review

Black Diamond Gizmo HeadlampThis is a fantastic headlamp. Besides this headlamp, I also own the Black Diamond Zenix IQ.However, I find myself using the Gizmo 99% of the time however. The reasons I prefer the Gizmo are as follows:
- the Gizmo weighs significantly less than the Zenix IQ
- unlike the Zenix IQ, the Gizmo does *not* have a battery pack in the back of the strap....making the Gizmo perfect for use as a reading lamp while laying in bed.
- the Gizmo is more compact (and lighter), making it easier to carry in a pocket and/or to carry with you in a backpack for "just in case I need a headlamp" situations.

Although I would still recommend the Zenix IQ as a great headlamp for long hikes (provides more output light when you really need to see distances for unknown terrain), I find that I use my Gizmo 99% of the time because in its low-output mode it is the perfect reading lamp and in its high-output mode it provides plenty of light for walking around a campsite, etc.

Princeton Tec Fuel Headlamp Review

Princeton Tec Fuel HeadlampI have owned this light for about 4 months, and have really liked having it. I ordered it because it had high ratings on REI's website, and it looked sturdy (I really dislike headlamps that lose the ability to stay pointed the direction you set them at). I have used it to ride my bike in the dark, hike, and read books after my wife goes to bed. It works great for all applications. The pivot works great, and doesn't show any signs of losing its grip. The different light settings are great for different situations. The Fuel is inexpensive, but worth the money. I even saw a review of the Tactikka Plus (Petzl) where someone switched and liked this lamp a lot more. This is a great lamp for anyone, and at the price, you could have two for the price of other comparable models. Would recommend to anyone.

Nalgene Hydration Accessories Review

Nalgene Hydration AccessoriesThis was an OEM replacement for my nalgene bladder and I'm extremely happy with it. I received the one I wanted (even though the picture shows a couple different ones)and yes, it came with an extra magnet. Now I don't have to switch everything between big pack and day pack. I really like the shut-off feature and the magnetic mount. Usually when I'm riding (or hiking,) I just spit out the bite-valve when I'm done drinking and it finds it's own way back to its holder, this is really convenient while riding on the trail.

Black Diamond Moxie Headlamp Review

Black Diamond Moxie HeadlampI bought this for my wife for our backpacking trips. She was mainly concerned with how "cute" it was, but I needed to know that it was functional. It is a great light. With four LEDs and 4 light settings it is great for all situations.

It has High, medium, and low settings, plus a blinking emergency setting. The light is very bright and you can see for a good 30 ft ahead of you with no problem distinguishing objects Some say that changing between the settings is hard because you have to partially push down on the button, and if you push to far it turns it off.I had this trouble when i borrowed it from my wife, but she quickly came over and did it for me.So it is really just getting use to it.It is by no means hard, just need to get the feel for it.I would recommend this light to anyone who wants a water tight, stylish and functional headlight.

Nathan HPL #020 2.0 Liter Men's 2-Liter Hydration Race Vest (Flint Grey) Review

Nathan HPL #020 2.0 Liter Men's 2-Liter Hydration Race VestI just received this and went right on my scheduled 20 mile run.The pack when full weights about 6lbs, which takes about 1/2 minute off your pace until you get used to it and begin to drink from the pack.I mixed 70oz of Cytomax with Endurolytes powder. The 70oz was enough for the 20 miles, but you will need to tank up again for full marathon.I would recommend filling up 1/2 for best results of weight vs duration depending on your access to water at 15 mile mark.If none is available this does the trick.

The package:
Lots of room for cell phone, drink mix, gu packs, camera, pair of dry socks. Two side pocket in front for quick access for needed items. It also allows you to change layers and store them on pack, which works for cold mornings that get warmer within a few hours of your run.
Pack stays on back without movement, but you will hear the liquid sloshing.I did not chafe on 20 mile run, and straps did not put pressure on shoulders with a thin tech shirt. This would be best for remote trail runs where you are away from any support (7-11, gas stations, fast food)

The fit:
The front has a clip for the hose.I found that it is adjustable and with a few tries was able to get it to stay put. There are two sliding clips on the front that allow for vest to remain comfortable.

The cleanup:
Imixed a mild bleach solution to clean out and dry. There are two holesat top to hang unit for drying.

Apex Pro, Black Review

Apex Pro, Black*** New Model Alert! ***

There is a new model revision, which DOUBLES the light output from 60 lumens (which is good out to +/- 70yards) to 130 Lumens (good out to +/- 120yrds). This goes for all apex models (the AA model, the CR123 model here and the external battery pack model)

As of December '08, there are a lot of resellers trying to dump the older model, which are selling in the $60-$70 price range. The newer model is selling for around $90. If a reseller's advertisement doesn't list it as the "New 130 Lumen" model, then it probably isn't. The only way to determine which version you are holding in your hand is to look for the "130 Lumen" sticker on the retail box, and the model number, which is now "APXR" (it was APX on the older model).

Here is a link to Princeton Tec's current Apex page: http://www.princetontec.com/?q=node/68

If you can't find the new one here at Amazon, check out Lighthound.

IMO, Spend the extra $20 to get the higher Lumen model. It will allow you to leave you high-output flashlight at home and just use this light for all your daily outdoor adventure needs. With the older model, I always carried a second flashlight of at least 120 Lumens (preferably around 200) for long range spotlight needs. This new model takes care of almost all my spot needs now, so it really does double duty and is well worth the extra $20 or so.

As for which model to get (AA or CR123), it comes down to if you have any other CR123 flashlights (I have 5 of them), or if you are weight sensitive (this one is light, the AA model is kind of heavy!). If I didn't have any other CR123 devices, I'd probably live with the weight of the AA model, since you can buy bulk AA's at Costco or Sam's Club for very cheap.

Click me if this info helps! thanks.

Seattle Sports Omni-Dry Backpack (Green) Review

Seattle Sports Omni-Dry BackpackJust got this and I have to say it seems very well constructed.

It's essentially a standard roll-top dry bag with fairly comfortable backpack straps.

All of the points on the bag that have straps attached are heavily reinforced.

The main thing I noticed when it arrived though is that this bag is BIG.

I had glossed over the dimensions when ordering, but take a close look.

The pack I use for backpacking trips is less than half the internal volume that this bag has.

Seattle Sports Canyon Pack (Red) Review

Seattle Sports Canyon PackI bought this pack for canoe trips in the BWCA.It's large, tough and waterproof. The lumbar strap is a nice help on portages. However, when lifting the pack by a shoulder strap, the top adjusting straps tore at the pack anchor material; on the first day I used it.Also, the plastic clips sometimes refuse to open.Frustrating.My friend purchased a Dulutch pack for three times the price, but I think it will last three times as long.

Garmin Forerunner 305 GPS Receiver With Heart Rate Monitor Review

Garmin Forerunner 305 GPS Receiver With Heart Rate MonitorI like this thing quite a lot. I've had it for about three weeks, and have used it on 12 workouts so far.I use it primarily for running, with biking a secondary usage. The main reason I wanted it was for the instantaneous readout of distance, running pace and heart rate, the latter needed for the speed work I want to do this running season.

The core functionality (distance and heart rate monitoring) works perfectly. There's none of the signal drops I've had with other heart monitors.Once the satellites are initially acquired, I've only had one dropout when I was outside. The initial acquisition of the satellites can be quirky and can take some time. The accuracy (according to the readout) is +/- 25ft, depending on how many satellites can be found.I've compared the distance measurement on the GPS with a known, measured distance on one of the trails I run on (the Chicago lakefront path). The GPS always increments a mile when I'm within 5 or 10 feet of the mile marker sign on the path.Well, I guess that's the least I should expect from a $350 GPS unit! Of course it's bigger than a normal running stopwatch, but that hasn't bothered me at all.The heart rate strap is also very comfortable and well-designed.

The display is crisp and has one outstanding feature: The information presented on the various pages can be completely user-customized.The default screen layout is rather poor, but in just a few steps I could replace it with the information I wanted to see while I run. There are almost 40 different data fields you can choose from for display. Examples: current pace, average lap pace, average run pace, heartrate, distance.

The only disappointment is the point-in-time (instantaneous) pace measurement: It varies wildly during a run.I see swings as big as +/-3 minutes/mile.I'm a marathoner and I know my pace is fairly consistent during a run.I just looked at my run today, and according to the data the first mile varied from 5:57/mile to 12:06 mile. I suspect the problem is either in the averaging algorithm (too short a distance?), or in the uncertainty that results from different satellites coming in and out of view. The variations seem to get worse under tree cover compared with an open area.Luckily there's a lap-average pace that can be presented, and at least that value is useful and more accurate. The bottom line is that you can't look at the watch and say "right now I'm running 9 mins/mile". There is the ability to specify a pace smoothing factor, but I have it maxed out and still see the variations. The elevation readout also seems inaccurate, but that isn't important to me.

Upload of workout data to the PC software (Training Center) is transparent. The PC software is very good for presenting time/distance/pace/heartrate/calorie data. However the maps it shows are very crude.I've worked a bit with one of the online, subscription services (MotionBased). That looks really good and provides some additional functionality beyond the included Training Center software, although I still haven't decided if it's worth the $$$ yet for long-term data storage.MotionBased allows export to Google Earth, and it's tremendously cool to see your running path superimposed on a satellite image. You can recharge the unit through the USB port on your computer, although it's slower than using the dedicated recharger.

I had hoped that owning this device would prove motivational for me, and indeed it has.I can't imagine running or biking without it. Updating my training log is trivial now: Plug this thing into my computer, and it's done.My hope is that a future software update will do something about the pace calculation (maybe a few additional levels of smoothing?).If so, the Forerunner 305 would earn 5 stars+++.Positives:

Flawless heart rate sampling
Great distance measuring and lap-average pace calculation
Seamless integration with a PC
Fully-automatic training log update
User-customizable displayNegatives;

Wildly-varying pace readout.

Black Diamond Cosmo Headlamp Review

Black Diamond Cosmo HeadlampI have owned this headlamp for 6 months. I use it at my mountain cabin where it is sometimes pitch dark. I cannot say enough good things about how it brightens the night. I use the low setting for around the campfire or for house hold chores. The high setting single beam throws light clearly for about 80 yds. I use it for night hiking. Some headlights reflect down into the eyes of the user this one does not. I am buying a few more of these as I have need in my car and around the home, it is 1000x better than a flashlight. Great unit!!!
