AMK Heatsheets Emergency Bivvy from Rescue Essentials Review

AMK Heatsheets Emergency Bivvy from Rescue EssentialsThis is an outstanding piece of equipment.None of us fully expects to be caught in a bad situation; they EMERGE upon us, and we'd better be prepared.

I ordered this for my daily emergency kit (something that would fit in a small shoulder pouch or Camelbak M.U.L.E.If you're looking for a sleeping bag for regular use, by all means, buy the doggone sleeping bag. This isn't it.For good lightweight bags, check out SnugPack. They're great. But I honestly don't want to carry around even a compact 3 lb. sleeping bag every day "just in case" I get caught needing shelter. This little bivvy foots the bill perfectly.

The Heatsheets Emergency Bivvy in the "stuff sack" is about half the size of a soda can and weighs mere ounces.I didn't weigh it, but it's negligible. The stuff sack is ultralight nylon with a cheap but sufficient drawstring.
The Bivvy itself is made of reflective mylar with a hi-viz orange coating on the outside. The material is THIN!But it's warm. You'll retain 90% of your body heat from the bag alone, which is good in case your clothes get soaked and you have to hang them out to dry.The mylar in this product is a bit better than in the cheaper fold-up space blankets you see at most big-box stores. It's got a bit of flex/stretch to it and is slightly more tear resistant. It WILL tear, of course, but it's not as disastrous as in the other options.Tears can be repaired with duct tape in a pinch.

If you're serious about building an emergency kit, you need to add this piece of gear. It's better for personal insulation than a space blanket, as it's a bag.You can still pack the "blanket" and use that as a tarp/shelter.For the price, the size, the weight and the added tech above the older blankets, it's hard to go wrong with this for a short term emergency.

Sierra Designs Moken 4 Person Basecamp Tent Review

Sierra Designs Moken 4 Person Basecamp TentSo far so good with this well designed tent. I am currently "camping" on a "tent" platform with timber frame posts and beams all around and 3 walls about a third of the way done with natural building techniques. I also have a standard framed roof with a tarp pinned down to it. I am seeking to see if this tent will over winter in a partially built structure in order to observe the natural building process as it is performing. This will allow me to make design changes to the structure without actually having to deconstruct or settle on a less than optimally performing house.
As far as what can be said about the tent, the design is solid and well thought out. The poles are super strong and surprisingly easy to assemble. I am still assessing the whole seperated room thing????? The floor does not go all the way across and it is difficult to tell whether or not this will be the best situation until I try it staked and on the earth next summer. Maybe the footprint is a needed accessory, in which case it should be considered an accessory????????
All in all this was the best tent that I could find at this pricemark.

Product Description:
The Moken are water gypsies in southeast Asia who sail the seas and survive away from the rest of the world. Now Sierra Designs adapts the Moken's highly skilled living philosophy to the company's most inventive tents, the Moken 4 and 6. The Moken 4 offers two 34.5-square-foot end rooms that hang inside the tent fly, giving you separate sleeping rooms for parents, kids, couples, and dogs. You can also remove one or both end rooms to make one enormous shelter. Other details include color-coded webbing and poles to make setup a breeze; crossing tent poles to increase strength; and double-track zipper sliders on the vestibules. The result is a family living shelter that's durable, comfortable, and functional.

The large doors let you create shaded, open-air entrance when staked. Features:

Airflow vent system: This venting system allows air to circulate throughout the tent when needed. It also features an angled design with a mesh backing, so rain or snow will not get in.
Color-coded webbing and poles: The color-coded webbing guides the pole placement for a quick, easy setup. Made of durable, lightweight nylon, the webbing also assists with quick rainfly setup.
Dye-free optic white canopy: The canopy transmits light more effectively to produce a brighter, more pleasant environment when spending long hours inside the tent. Sierra Designs produces the optic white canopy without using chemical dyes.
Locking pole tips: A Sierra Designs innovation, these pole tips stay locked in the grommet for a faster, easier setup.
Sew-free windows: These windows employ bonded tape to create a stronger, lighter window than traditional sewn-and-sealed versions. This allows Sierra to place the windows in the most optimal location on a tent fly.
SuperSeal floor: Combining the benefits of catenary and bathtub floors, the SuperSeal floor offers a raised, taped perimeter seam that's guaranteed waterproof. The floor also maintains a tighter pitch with a better wind line to prevent flapping.
Swift Clips: This Sierra innovation allows campers to stake the tent before attaching the body to the pole structure.
Tent Guard with Ultra Fresh: Applied as part of the PU coating on Sierra's rain flies, floors, and footprints, Tent Guard extends the life of a tent by thwarting mold, mildew, and fungus. The Tent Guard is particularly valuable on extended trips or in damp climates, as it protects a tent if it's packed or stored temporarily while wet.
Other details: Attached common area/vestibule footprint, DAC Press Fit poles, double grommets, double-track vestibule, gear pockets, PVC-free tape, quick-pitch external pole structure, reflective guy-outs and zipper pulls, stash door, and short-sheet adjustable rainfly.

Gigatent Mini Explorer Dome - Model MM 01 Children's Play Tent Review

Gigatent Mini Explorer Dome - Model MM 01 Children's Play TentThis is the cutest little "pup tent".I take my miniature Yorkie with me kayaking and have sometimes strapped it to the front of the Yak.When it is windy he goes inside the little tent and takes a nap out of the wind. He is only three pounds, so this would only work for a smaller dog or cat...but it is constructed just like a real tent and the quality is the same. I use to have one for my hedgehog too. He would crawl up the ramp and sleep all day in the tent. Easy to wash. Just rinse and let it dry.

The see-through mesh walls provide unmatched ventilation. The Mountain Breeze is built using Eureka's StormShield technology, which helps you stay dry even during inclement weather. About Eureka!
Though the exact year is unknown, Eureka's long history begins prior to 1895 in Binghamton, New York, where the company still resides today. Then known as the Eureka Tent & Awning Company, its first wares were canvas products--most notably, Conestoga wagon covers and horse blankets for nineteenth century American frontiersmen--as well as American flags, store awnings, and camping tents.
The company increased production of its custom canvas products locally throughout the 1930s and during the 1940 and even fabricated and erected the IBM "tent cities" just outside Binghamton. The seven acres of tents housed thousands of IBM salesmen during the company's annual stockholders meeting, which had since outgrown its previous locale. In the 1940s, with the advent of World War II and the increased demand for hospital ward tents, Eureka expanded operations and began shipping tents worldwide. Ultimately, upon the post-war return of the GIs and the resultant housing shortage, Eureka turned its attention to the home front during the 1950s by supplying awnings for the multitude of mobile homes that were purchased.
In 1960, Eureka's new and innovative Draw-Tite tent, with its practical, free standing external frame, was used in a Himalayan Expedition to Nepal by world renowned Sir Edmund Hillary, the first person documented to summit Mt. Everest only six years earlier. In 1963, Eureka made history during its own Mt. Everest ascent, with more than 60 of its tents sheltering participants from fierce 60+ mph winds and temperatures reaching below -20°F during the first all American Mt. Everest Expedition.
For backpackers and families, Eureka introduced its legendary Timberline tent in the 1970s. Truly the first StormShield design, this completely self-supporting and lightweight backpacking tent became one of the most popular tents the entire industry with sales reaching over 1 million by its ten year anniversary.
Eureka tents have also traveled as part of several historic expeditions, including the American Women's Himalayan Expedition to Annapurna I in 1978 and the first Mt. Everest ascents by a Canadian and American woman in 1986 and 1988. In recent history, tents specially designed and donated by Eureka sheltered Eric Simonson and his team on two historic research expeditions to Mount Everest, this time in a quest for truth regarding the 1924 attempted summit of early English explorers George Mallory and Andrew Irvine. During the 1999 expedition, the team made history finding the remains of George Mallory, but the complete mystery remained unsolved. Returning in 2001 to search for more clues, the team found amazing historical artifacts which are now on display at the Smithsonian.
Amazon.com Tent Guide
Selecting a Tent
Fortunately, there are all kinds of tents for weekend car campers, Everest expeditions, and everything in-between. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
Expect the Worst
In general, it's wise to choose a tent that's designed to withstand the worst possible conditions you think you'll face. For instance, if you're a summer car camper in a region where weather is predictable, an inexpensive family or all purpose tent will likely do the trick--especially if a vehicle is nearby and you can make a mad dash for safety when bad weather swoops in! If you're a backpacker, alpine climber or bike explorer, or if you like to car camp in all seasons, you'll want to take something designed to handle more adversity.
Three- and Four-Season Tents
For summer, early fall and late spring outings, choose a three-season tent. At minimum, a quality three season tent will have lightweight aluminum poles, a reinforced floor, durable stitching, and a quality rain-fly. Some three-season tents offer more open-air netting and are more specifically designed for summer backpacking and other activities. Many premium tents will feature pre-sealed, taped seams and a silicone-impregnated rain-fly for enhanced waterproofness.
For winter camping or alpine travel, go with a four season model. Because they typically feature more durable fabric coatings, as well as more poles, four-season tents are designed to handle heavy snowfall and high winds without collapsing. Of course, four-season tents exact a weight penalty of about 10 to 20 percent in trade for their strength and durability. They also tend to be more expensive.
Domes and Tunnels
Tents are broadly categorized into two types, freestanding, which can stand up on their own, and those that must be staked down in order to stand upright. Freestanding tents often incorporate a dome-shaped design, and most four-season tents are constructed this way because a dome leaves no flat spots on the outer surface where snow can collect. Domes are also inherently stronger than any other design. Meanwhile, many three-season models employ a modified dome configuration called a tunnel. These are still freestanding, but they require fewer poles than a dome, use less fabric, and typically have a rectangular floor-plan that offers less storage space than a dome configuration. Many one and two-person tents are not freestanding, but they make up for it by being more lightweight. Because they use fewer poles, they can also be quicker to set up than a dome.
Size Matters
Ask yourself how many people you'd like to fit in your fabric hotel now and in the future. For soloists and minimalists, check out one-person tents. If you're a mega-minimalist, or if you have your eye on doing some big wall climbs, a waterproof-breathable bivy sack is the ticket. Some bivy sacks feature poles and stake points to give you a little more breathing room. Also, if you don't need bug protection and you want to save weight, check out open-air shelters.
Families who plan on car camping in good weather can choose from a wide range of jumbo-sized tents that will accommodate all your little ones with room to spare. A wide range of capacities is also available for three- and four-season backpacking and expedition tents. Remember, though, the bigger the tent you buy, the heavier it will be, although it's easy to break up the tent components among several people in your group. It's also helpful to compare the volume and floor-space measurements of models you're considering.

Princeton Tec Vortec 4AA Halogen Headlamp (Granite) Review

Princeton Tec Vortec 4AA Halogen HeadlampThis is a very solid headlamp. It is bright. It is substantially well made. I believe it is waterproof. It turns on with a simple twist of the wrist to the right, and turns off with a twist to the left. You twist the black part. There is no adjusting the width of the beam. It is a narrow beam and twisting it on further doesn't seem to do anything at all. This is the way I like it so it is perfect for me. Other headlamps start narrow and adjust wide, or start wide and adjust narrow. Not this one, just narrow. The straps are very strong. I really like my Vortec.

Sierra Designs Origami 2 Person Ultralight Shelter Review

Sierra Designs Origami 2 Person Ultralight ShelterI have only used this shelter in the field for a two day trip, so that is all I have to go on...

My main attractions to this style of shelter were the weight to space ratio, and to the Origami specifically, the price (I paid $111). I looked at a similar shelter called the Trailstar made by a company called Mountain Laurel Designs, which is lighter (by nearly a pound) but those weight savings are accomplished through a compromise on the ease of entry; the Trailstar must be propped up on one side to get in, versus easy zipper entry. The Trailstar also would have cost me ~$35 dollars more.

I'm too cheap to buy adjustable trekking poles so I was stuck carrying the included adjustable pole, the lightweight ski poles I use are only 45" tall and that just wasn't quite enough to set up the tent properly and have an adequately comfortable space for two people and two dogs (medium sized dogs: Sheltie/Australian Shepherd mix). One thing I have not figured out is whether the listed weight includes the pole; with most tents it usually does, but I'm not sure with this one (I'm too cheap to buy a scale). Setup does take some practice; I have done it 5 times and still have not mastered it. One of those times was out in the backcountry trying to suspend it between two trees. Though it can be done and probably with some practice it can be done well, I did not find this to be a very practical method. If you can master it, it would save some weight and open up that space in the middle (possibly for another person, or just to allow you and your hiking partner to cuddle, if you so desire).

I was somewhat worried about bugs with the open design, but camping at about 8500 feet in central Colorado mid-August, I had no problems. The only other issue I had with the open design was with my dogs. I attached their leashes to the center pole and that was enough to keep them in the tent through the night, but it did not prevent them from a seemingly endless curiosity about what was going on outside the tent, and with just enough space for them to stick their heads out, this was a problem that interfered with sleep. The solution I'm working on is a curtain of no-see-um mesh to hang around the perimeter which will act as a visual deterrent and a little extra bug protection, while maintaining crucial ventilation, and only adding a few ounces of weight.

We did experience some light rain while we had the tent set up between the two trees and though there was no problem with water getting in, there was one point where water managed to gather on the bottom edge of the tent (I could not get the cord I was using (a couple of the included guy lines) taught enough to hold the tent up properly once I staked it out (it will take some practice and perhaps a different type of cord with less elasticity). As far as moisture in the tent, I had no problem with that, leaving about a 2-3 inch gap between the edge and the ground seemed to allow plenty of ventilation and it breathed much better than my last tent (single wall Eureka Zeus 2).

Well, I hope I have covered the important issues. Overall I think this is a good shelter but it really comes down to individual needs/preferences. If you like the security of at least one layer of mesh or sil-nylon between you and nature than this is not the tent for you. It is a good choice if you are trying to transition from heavier fully enclosed tent style to lightweight open floor tarps though. I would not pay the MSRP of $175 or whatever it is, you ought to be able to find it cheaper than that on here or Google shopping, I was not willing to pay more than $125, and I think that is about the most it is worth, otherwise I would pay a little more for something like a Golite Shangri-la 3 or Black Diamond Megalight or something like that. Well, I'm not sure how these reviews work, but if possible feel free to ask me any other questions about the Sierra Designs Origami 2 and hopefully I can help you. I hope this helps you make your decision!

Jeep 7x5 2-3-Person Hiker Tent Review

Jeep 7x5 2-3-Person Hiker TentI haven't actually used this tent but I just wanted to alert potential buyers that this tent does NOT weigh 3.4 lbs as advertised. ShelterLogic 8 Piece Anchor Kit Review

ShelterLogic 8 Piece Anchor KitThe person responsible for the design of these augers clearly doesn't understand the principle behind a screw. The plane of the auger is not constant and the fins are not perpendicular to the axis of the rod. The result? Instead of digging down into the ground and holding tightly, this thing either just spins and won't dig in because the changing plane gives too much resistance or if you push REALLY hard and get it to go into the ground, it just creates a huge void where the hold-down will move up and down nearly two inches.
My advise...don't make the same mistake I did and pay your hard-earned money for these pieces of garbage. Buy a few "candy-cane" tent stakes at your favorite camping supplied dealer...they're much cheaper and will actually work.

Eddie Bauer® 15x13' Astoria Gazebo Review

Eddie Bauer® 15x13' Astoria GazeboWe liked the size and shape of this. We liked the price. I'd never used one of these before.

We had 3 people setting it up, and it took about 1/2 hour. Easy to setup with 3 people! Two people would have taken longer. One person... I venture to guess it would have seemed impossible.

Our package said limited lifetime warranty. This is what is not covered:
"Damage to the product that results from normal wear and tear, abuse, misuse, neglect, natural disaster, or any unauthorized disassembly, repair or modification." Well, it rained ONE TIME and the thing collapsed, causing two of the poles to bend in half with what appears to be the ease of aluminum cans. This was after it had been setup for approx. 3 weeks.

I called customer service, and they say weather damage is not covered. Even though it was only setup for 3 weeks, they implied that the damage was due to 'wear and tear.'

You know, if I had money I'd have to contact a lawyer regarding their failure to back their lifetime warranty, since a 10 minute rain storm does not constitute 'natural disaster.' I am sure there are more than two customers who have had unsatisfactory results from this product!

Of course, if I had money, I would have bought a more expensive and obviously more reliable screen house!!!

Customer service is also very rude.

Hmmm.... Amazon has a link to the CPSC, maybe I will report this item as unsafe. Because anyone taking shelter in it during a 10 minute rainstorm may find it collapsing on their head.

Trademark Outdoor Umbrella Table ScreenI had high hopes for this product, and it seemed to meet my needs (fit over a large 9' umbrella; conform to an octagonal shaped rise in the deck where the furniture sits). However, as we were filling the base with water from the hose, water started leaking everywhere. The plastic tube that gets filled with water to add weight to the bottom of the net (to keep bugs out) was split in two.Returned this item as defective, and was hit with a restocking fee!To summarize, poor quality control and a poorly made product. Not recommended.

Wenzel Full Insta-bed with Comfort Adjust Pump Review

Wenzel Full Insta-bed with Comfort Adjust PumpI've slept on a few air mattresses, I live in NYC, were space is a premium. I needed something that could tuck away easily but still be a more comfortable option than the couch.I realized it would have been nice to get an automatic pump versus a hand pump. But, that said, this is an air mattress that you could take car camping.I slept on it, it was comfortable.I think it lost a little air-- but I'm not sure I may have not screwed a cap on tightly enough. It is a great deal for the price, in that it is no less comfortable that the $100plus air mattresses I have slept on.AND-- i used a hair dryer to do the bulk of the blowing up, which was nice.I just use the hand pump for the finishing touch.Fits very compactly into a little storage ottoman (with room for sheets and blankets).I would give it 5 stars except for whether the loss of air was not user error, and the hand pump.

Coleman Exponent Heka X2 Tent Review

Coleman Exponent Heka X2 TentYou can get this tent a whole lot cheaper at the Coleman online outlet at their website. That's where they sell the products they don't manufacture anymore but still have in inventory. I got mine for seventy.I just received mine yesterday and I haven't camped in this exact tent yet, but as soon as I do try it out I'll give a field review of it. However I HAVEcamped in one owned by a friend before and it held up to some pretty foul weather with no problems at all. Plus, for the price, I don't know how you can beat it!

The rainfly is great and features two good sized "kickstand" vents in the top rear, great for keeping it cooler when you're stuck in the rain during the hot months. Doesn't turn into a sauna with those vents.

My only real gripe is the "Integrated groundsheet that can be zipped on and off". Mine didn't come with one. There's no zipper anywhere near the floor either, so it doesn't even look like it was meant to have one. Not a big deal, as I always make a custom ground sheet for all my tents anyway. Having the integrated ground sheet would have been nice, but not really a deal maker or breaker in my decision to purchase this tent.

The front vestibule does zip on and off however. You could remove it to lighten your load a little, butI plan on having it attached all the time for the protection, privacy and storage.

The poles are VERY nice. I love aluminum poles as opposed to the fiberglass poles.

There's a pretty fair amount of room on the inside as well. It's a two man, but I consider it a one man with room for some stuff.I can easily sit up and move about. Not claustrophobic at all. With the fly off, there's plenty of mesh for stargazing and catching a breeze. Two decent sized storage pockets on either side are nice, too.

Tent also comes with a handy little repair kit. Nice of them I suppose.

One more gripe that I forgot about: I don't like the pole sleeves on this (or any other) tent. I would much rather just use clips than have to fiddle around with pole sleeves. They just snag and make you mad.

But all in all, and especially for the price I got, I think this tent is a real winner.

Freshette Feminine Portable Urinary Director Review

Freshette Feminine Portable Urinary DirectorThis is the best thing for women since sliced bread.I use it for bass fishing on our boat 1-2 days a week and GREAT for tournament fishing.I wish I had it when we did a lot of dirt bike riding (It's hard to find a good place to hide in the desert surrounded by men waiting for you to hurry up)!!.Easy to use but I do recommend practicing at home first to get the hang of it.It takes some willpower to relax enough while standing.Thank you so much for figuring it out for us!!!I've already recommended it to several women and my husband tells everyone he knows!!

Sierra Designs Lightning XT 3 Tent 3-Person 3-Season Review

Sierra Designs Lightning XT 3 Tent 3-Person 3-SeasonI have been using a North Face Starfire (tunnel-dome style) tent for 12 years on backpacking and a few car-camping trips with zero complaints - at least until my wife and I got a black lab dog.Quarters were cozy for the two of us, but for the three of us it was downright cramped. So we purchased this Sierra Designs Lightning XT tent for our backpacking outings to have extra room for our dog and gear.We like to hike, camp, and backpack year round in Idaho, so we get everything from 100 degree heat (for a few weeks, anyways) to wet and rainy Spring and Fall seasons, to 10 or 12 feet of snow.It is all usually accompanied by wind of some form or another. We haven't put three people in it, so I can't speak for whether or not it is a roomy 3 person tent, but it sure is a comfy and spacious 2 man tent, even with the dog.

The tent is super light weight; it packs down to the same size and weighs about the same as my North Face 2 man tent.Splitting it between two people makes even better and not at all bulky or heavy in a pack. The tent is almost entirely mesh, which my wife really likes on starry nights, with a bathtub style waterproof bottom. The rainfly is coated nylon and comes down just an inch or two shy of the ground with two vestibules, since there are two doors on the tent.It hooks in to the tent corners where the tent poles hook in, as well clips on to the poles for added stability.Setting the poles up is different than other tents I've used, but seems like it will hold up well in sub-hurricane winds. It is easier to do with two people, but it can be set up by one person if needs be.The tent doesn't have sleeves for the poles, there are just clips every foot or so which seems a little less bomb-proof than my North Face tent, but I haven't had any problems. The poles are hubbed, which also seems a bit less bomb-proof, but the major loads and stresses placed on the poles doesn't go through the hubs so I don't think it will be an issue in the future. The third less bomb-proof item is the fabric - its a little lighter and thinner than my North Face tent to save on weight and bulk. However, the poles, fabric, and clips are all very high quality, so I seriously doubt that I will have any issues with reliability or durability with this tent.

The idea to use Jake's Feet connectors, hubbed poles, and a full mesh top aren't brand new, and most of the big manufacturers buil tents this way.So I figure I won't knock the design unless I really do have a problem.Hence, it still get's 5 stars because it is a high quality, spacious, and VERY light and packable tent. Overall, I'm very pleased with the tent and expect years of service out of it without any issues.

Slumberjack Emergency Cot Review

Slumberjack Emergency CotThis cot is very sturdy. It takes me (who usually is very challenged at this sort of thing) absolutely no time to put together. It is "stiff"--meaning it doesn't sag.Best of all, it fits in a bag about the same size as a camping chair.I used it camping, and my son (11) uses it for sleepovers.Mind you, it isn't real "comfortable."I can sleep on it without backaches, but it isn't a puffy mattress. But it serves its purpose. We will probably purchase two more, so noone has to sleep on air mattresses camping.

Kelty Yellowstone 4 Footprint Review

Kelty Yellowstone 4 FootprintI received the footprint today and was disappointed in the material which is the same as the tent.It does have multiple ways to tie down the footprint, but for the price, it does not deliver the value.I found other footprints made of heavier material at 20% of the cost. The light weight might be an advantage for backpackers. Also there are no instructions as to how the mulitple tie-downs could be used with the tent. The one other advantage is that it fits the footprint of the tent unlike other generic footprints. If I had the oportunity for a do-over, I would not make this purchase.

MSR Zing Tarp Review

MSR Zing TarpI recently purchased the Zing and also own an MSR Outfitter Wing tarp. The design for both is essentially identical. The Zing is made of lighter weight ripstop material, and that makes it both lighter but also much more compact when stored. The Outfitter Wing is very heavy duty, and the fabric is opaque. That's bound to last longer for commercial users. But the MSR Zing is an excellent compromise between strength and portability. The Zing cloth is translucent, with a pleasant amber color. It's opaque enough to provide useful shade, but transmits enough light to be more cheery on overcast days.

The shape is versatile, relatively easy to pitch, and can be very wind-resistant depending on how you orient it and set up the guylines. Consider getting two additional poles. This tarp sets up really well with four poles providing excellent stand-up head clearance. The concatenary curves allow for smooth tensioning without wrinkles or sags that hold rainwater or flap noisly in the wind.

I was disappointed that the cord guylines provided are not reflectorized. Our Oufitter Wing has reflective cords that are essential to safe navigation around camp after dark. I've had to order reflective cording, and that's a signficant expense to incur on an already expensive product. I'm tempted to downgrade my rating to four stars, but I bought this at a discount from the Amazon warehouse, so I'll be generous.

For accessory poles, I recommend Kelty's Noah's Staff or Noah's poles. The "staff" is not adjustable but these poles are slimmer and lighter in keeping with the Zing's lighter weight. The MSR wing tarps and vastly superior to Kelty's Noah's tarps, so just go for the Kelty poles.

EARTH ROLL COT w/ FAST, EASY Set Up & Take Down --Plus...FREE LED Flashlight -- STRONGER Anodized Aluminum Frame -- CONVENIENT Roll up Design with Carry Bag Review

EARTH ROLL COT w/ FAST, EASY Set Up & Take Down --Plus...FREE LED Flashlight -- STRONGER Anodized Aluminum Frame -- CONVENIENT Roll up Design with Carry BagI bought two of these cots for my sons who are going to the Scout Jamboree this summer. The cot needs to be small enough to fit in a 36 inch long duffel bag and durable enough to endure scouting rigors. It turns out this cot works well. When collapsed, it fits diagonally in the bottom of the duffel bag (in its carry bagthe cot is 38 inches long). My youngest son was able to assemble it on his own on the first attempt. He likes it so much he uses it to watch TV.My older son is impressed with the cot's durability and comfort for camping.Other than being low to the ground and a bit tipsy if you roll too far to one side, my sons give this product a thumbs up.

N!ergy 1310 Review

Nergy 1310We love our tent. Our first setup took 30 minutes without the fly, later setups took 15 to 20 minutes with 2 adults. First take down took 15 minutes with me (the mom) and our 10 year old daughter. Easy instructions to follow, be sure you notice the difference between the fly pole and the 2 black tent poles (the fly pole looks slightly thinner and has a longer rubber ending). We were able to fit our family of six inside. We used 2 king size mattresses, 1 small toddler pad, and a 7 year old boy's sleeping pad. Not a lot of extra room after that for gear, but we made it work. We had light rain after the 1st setup and the fly worked well. We did seal the seams. Good ventilation with the windows and upper openings. Would be nice if they had put pockets on the side walls. You do have a mesh gear holder that hangs from the ceiling. Ironically, we bought the power pak and everything but have yet to use the electricity. I'm hoping this comes in handy when we camp where we do not have access to an outlet.
All in all, we're very happy with the tent, high ceiling, feels airy and light inside. The ceiling and wall joints help reduce tension on the rods which I hope help the tent to last longer.

Black Diamond NRG Rechargeable Battery Kit Review

Black Diamond NRG Rechargeable Battery KitI purchased this to use with a Black Diamond Icon headlamp. The battery fits the compartment perfectly, and it's very easy to plug the recharger into the headlamp ( there's a connector with a rubber cover on the outside of the headlamp battery compartment ).Though I have no need for all the power adapters, I think this is a nice feature - not a bunch of different chargers - just slide in the adapter you need. The battery was already charged when I got the kit.The charge lasted much longer than the rechargeable AA batteries I have been using, and it didn't take long to recharge the battery pack when it did run down. This is a nice, well designed battery pack.

Paha Que Food Tent Md: 800-2000-000 Review

Paha Que Food Tent Md: 800-2000-000The concept is solid, but this product could use a couple things. As it stands, the flaps on the front and back don't actually form any kind of seal over the access windows, they just sort of drape over the openings and secure on the bottom with Velcro. This leaves significant gaps along the sides, especially near the top, as if the netting and the stitching weren't the same size; it looks like the seams on the side are too long to lay flat against the rest of the structure. I'll just have to pick up some Velcro to stick on the sides.

There's a strap on the bottom to secure it to the table it's on. It can only strap to a table as shown in the picture. It would be nice if it was fed through a sleeve on the bottom that was in a tee shape the way a lot of dome tents are, or a separate strap and four of those [|] shaped strap adjuster dealies on the sides so you could also strap it lengthwise on the table since you don't always know the size of the table available to you, or you just want to make different use of the space.

Realistically the strap isn't a huge deal unless it's very windy and you aren't going to be putting anything inside it. The tent is almost entirely netting, so wind passes through it pretty easily and it doesn't take much to hold it down.

Kelty Sunshade Review

Kelty SunshadeBefore considering a purchase of this product, it's helpful to understand what it is and what it isn't. Depending on your intended application, you could find it light in weight or heavy, a good design or unusable. This is a review of the medium-size sunshade, but most of what I say should apply to the large model as well.

At 10+ pounds, this is not something anyone is likely to take on a backpack trip. A backpacker looking for shade will more likely choose something akin to Kelty's Noahs Tarp at under 2 pounds and half the price.

Since people may have to duck to enter this structure, and the walls hinder lateral visibility, and the dome shape does not cover the entire footprint, this would not be a great choice for a vendor setting up shop at an outdoor market. The vender would be better off choosing a much heavier portable structure with a rectangular canopy suspended on poles.

So, who would find this product useful? Well, perhaps a family spending a day at the beach, but if it's windy they will need to find ways to anchor the corners, perhaps with coolers or a car bumper, etc. But anyone setting up any kind of sun shelter on a sandy beach would have a similar issue to deal with. This structure does have the advantage of being free standing when erected; you just have to prevent it from blowing away.

I bought the Kelty Sunshade to use on river trips. It is small and light enough to easily take along in a canoe. It proved its worth the first night out when a storm blew in. I wish I had a video of my wife and me setting this thing up for the first time in gale-force winds and pelting rain. I know it would be a huge comedy hit on YouTube.

We got nowhere using the stakes and finally had to rely on a cooler and heavy water containers to hold down the windward side of the structure. The wind finally subsided, but it continued to rain all night. Without the Sunshade we would have been lying in our tent eating granola bars for dinner. With the Sunshade we cooked a hot dinner and enjoyed it seated in our outdoor dining room. It was pretty sweet.

We also set up the Sunshade to provide shade from the sun (novel idea) on layover days when we remained at camp. It did provide sun relief, but not as much as we would have liked. There is an inherent problem with using a lightweight fabric to block the hot rays of the sun; the sun's heat will penetrate the fabric causing the area underneath to heat up. If there is little wind to move the air, or if you are sitting within a few few feet of the fabric, you can become uncomfortably hot. In the future I will bring along a highly-reflective mylar sheet to drape over the sunshade during the hottest part of the day.

Other considerations...
I recommend buying a supplementary side wall. It is easy to attach and can be moved around the structure to match the movement of the sun or breezes.

I'm confident I could set up the Sunshade by myself, but it's a lot easier with two people - even then, not very easy. The problem is stretching the taut fabric over the fiberglass rods or poles. My wife held the pole while I used my strength to pull the metal grommet over the end of the rod. Maybe the fabric will loosen-up over time, and this process will become easier. On disassembly, do not pull the rods out of the fabric sleeves because the shock-corded sections will come apart and fight you. Bunch the fabric and push it off the pole instead. After we got the hang of it, we could unpack and assemble the Sunshade, or disassemble and pack it away, in about six or seven minutes (maybe a little longer in a gale).

Eureka Extended Stay 19-Foot by 14-Foot Eight-Person Family TentEureka Extended Stay 19- by 14-Foot Eight-Person Family Tentis no good. Its poor design made it function like a huge parachute.I set it up in my back yard to apply seam sealer and the tent disintegrated in less than 24 hours in a 10 to 15 MPH breeze.I had attached all clips to the poles and the tent was fully staked except for one loop inside, which stabilized the door in the room divider. The two main fiberglass poles that supported the rain fly split lengthwise and then sheered in two.The tent collapsed to the ground and could not be righted without replacement parts.I cannot believe that Eureka put their name on this tent.

About Eureka

Marmot Eos 1-Person 3-Season Tent Review

Marmot Eos 1-Person 3-Season TentBought this tent with foot print for a wilderness trek at the BSA Philmont high adventure camp.Light and easy to pitch and strike.Zippers work fast and with little sticking.Keeps rain out well (if the fly is pulled down well over the ends). The free standing design is great for shaking off rain or dew and drying in the sun before packing up for the trail.Good in the wind. I bought it for the extra shoulder room and fairly large vestibule while maintaining reasonable weight. Complaints include: the orange color attracts bees, flies and yellow jackets; I'm 5' 10" and I find the head space just a tad bit annoying; not enough pockets, no hanging spots (although the two zipper loops if put at the top can double as a hanging spot); the poles don't fold up into a real small smooth package (someday, they may poke though the carry sack); no separate bag for the poles; the vestibule/entry is only on one side, which limits options when selecting sites to pitch the tent; their is no color coding on the tent straps (as claimed in the instructions) to orient the poles with the tent and footprint.I really like this tent. The solo models all have trade-offs.I feel this tent is an excellent balance of size, weight, quality, price, value, and functionality.

The Marmot Eos 1-Person 3-Season tent is a lightweight solo tent that means business. Designed with Marmot's new Bare Bones set up system, the Eos provides more room with less weight and fewer pieces to set up. If you're traveling solo, you won't have anyone to help you hold the tent in while you put pieces together. Marmot eliminates the struggle so you can set up your tent in a flash with the one pole system. A roomy vestibule stores more gear outside the tent while still keeping it protected from weather. The true bathtub floor provides weather protection, and also acts as a splashguard in stormy conditions.
