Stratosphere Bivvi Shelter, Olive Review

Stratosphere Bivvi Shelter, OliveThis bivy will be good enough for backcountry recon or backpacking. It is light, but could be lighter. It seems as thought the zippers are sturdy, a plus, but also a place they could have lightened. The stakes that came with mine are heavy alloy.I recommend replacing them with lighter aluminum or opt not to use them. You could use this bivy with no stakes and no poles to save weight. The best option seems to be using one pole and one stake (hopefully lighter than stock) on the head end of the bivy.

Big Agnes Seedhouse Tent 1 Person Md: TSH1 Review

Big Agnes Seedhouse Tent 1 Person Md: TSH1I have been using this for a year, including backcountry backpacking in Yosemite. The tent packs well, is light, and comfortably accommodates me (6ft, 190lbs). It's solid in wind. However, the poles seem a bit on the flimsy side and my climbing partner has broken one on his similar tent, so I would be careful when setting up.

Sierra Designs Sirius 2 Person Three-Season Tent Review

Sierra Designs Sirius 2 Person Three-Season TentI've only used it once, but i was camping (in the sierras no less) during 2 days of hard rain. When I was cleaning up the site I noticed that I sizeable puddle had formed underneath my tent and very little water got inside. Very pleased overall with the tent.

Yellowstone Review

Yellowstonenot a completely bad product if you dont care about other tents out there that could be much more satisfying. For a two person it had enough room but it is not free standing meaning you need to hammer in the stakes in order for it to set up, the stakes are cheap and would probably bend after being used a couple times, and the fabric isnt all that great either. I didnt actually use it. I returned it because it wasnt ideal for backpacking. If you want to spend money on a tent for 2 buy the big agnes tents. Expensive, but pro status. oh yeah and the poles on the tent were the only nice thing about it. All packed up its about two feet across which would stick out to wide on a pack.

Slumberjack Taku Welded Bivy Review

Slumberjack Taku Welded BivyThis is an OK bivy for the price. The Delrin Hoop Frame that holds the bivy away from your face is more or less a joke. Its a plastic rod that is impossible to put into any other shape other than the twisted loop it arrives in in the package.I broke mine trying to get it to loosen up a little bit.Its not necessary anyway. I haven't used mine in any seriously bad weather yet. When I do I'll update this.

Eureka Freedom Outfitter 11-Foot by 6.5-Foot Two-Person Tent Review

Eureka Freedom Outfitter 11-Foot by 6.5-Foot Two-Person TentI bought my son a Eureka 4XT years ago when he was a Cub Scout & I was the Cubmaster. Now that he's in Boy Scouts, dads like me (I'm still an adult leader) have to use our own tents. However I've since landed in a wheelchair so this design really appealed to me.

Our Boy Scout Troop uses all Eureka Outfitter tents so the boys have no trouble assembling this for me if I need help. This is very important when we're too close for my chair to navigate between the tent plots as proved to be the case at West Point this year. The National Jambo will be even worse.

The fan door is awesome even for able bodies especially if the area is cramped. The door is more navigable than a staked flap which can create a tripping hazard.

Assembly is a little unusual at first but very sensible once you're used to it.

I encountered an extreme wind & rain event this year with no issues at all. This tent fared much better than the cheap mass merchant tents that so many parents buy.

Many people are shocked when they see me at a camping event in my custom off-road power-chair but this Eureka Freedom Outfitter makes it all possible in grand comfort & style.

This tapered rectangular dome tent sleeps two and has a self-supporting five-pole aluminum frame. The combination of pole pocket and continuous rod sleeves with post and grommet assembly allows set up from one side of tent or from a wheel chair. The combination side entry doors/windows in sleeping area are sized for side transfer of a person onto a cot. Pull handles on internal door and window zippers allow easy grasp and operation. It also features large windows for great views and excellent ventilation.

About Eureka
Though the exact year is unknown, Eureka's long history begins prior to 1895 in Binghamton, New York, where the company still resides today. Then known as the Eureka Tent & Awning Company, its first wares were canvas products--most notably, Conestoga wagon covers and horse blankets for nineteenth century American frontiersmen--as well as American flags, store awnings, and camping tents.
The company increased production of its custom canvas products locally throughout the 1930s and during the 1940 and even fabricated and erected the IBM "tent cities" just outside Binghamton. The seven acres of tents housed thousands of IBM salesmen during the company's annual stockholders meeting, which had since outgrown its previous locale. In the 1940s, with the advent of World War II and the increased demand for hospital ward tents, Eureka expanded operations and began shipping tents worldwide. Ultimately, upon the post-war return of the GIs and the resultant housing shortage, Eureka turned its attention to the home front during the 1950s by supplying awnings for the multitude of mobile homes that were purchased.
In 1960, Eureka's new and innovative Draw-Tite tent, with its practical, free standing external frame, was used in a Himalayan Expedition to Nepal by world renowned Sir Edmund Hillary, the first person documented to summit Mt. Everest only six years earlier. In 1963, Eureka made history during its own Mt. Everest ascent, with more than 60 of its tents sheltering participants from fierce 60+ mph winds and temperatures reaching below -20°F during the first all American Mt. Everest Expedition.
For backpackers and families, Eureka introduced its legendary Timberline tent in the 1970s. Truly the first StormShield design, this completely self-supporting and lightweight backpacking tent became one of the most popular tents the entire industry with sales reaching over 1 million by its ten year anniversary.
Eureka tents have also traveled as part of several historic expeditions, including the American Women's Himalayan Expedition to Annapurna I in 1978 and the first Mt. Everest ascents by a Canadian and American woman in 1986 and 1988. In recent history, tents specially designed and donated by Eureka sheltered Eric Simonson and his team on two historic research expeditions to Mount Everest, this time in a quest for truth regarding the 1924 attempted summit of early English explorers George Mallory and Andrew Irvine. During the 1999 expedition, the team made history finding the remains of George Mallory, but the complete mystery remained unsolved. Returning in 2001 to search for more clues, the team found amazing historical artifacts which are now on display at the Smithsonian.

Selecting a Tent
Fortunately, there are all kinds of tents for weekend car campers, Everest expeditions, and everything in-between. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
Expect the Worst
In general, it's wise to choose a tent that's designed to withstand the worst possible conditions you think you'll face. For instance, if you're a summer car camper in a region where weather is predictable, an inexpensive family or all purpose tent will likely do the trick--especially if a vehicle is nearby and you can make a mad dash for safety when bad weather swoops in! If you're a backpacker, alpine climber or bike explorer, or if you like to car camp in all seasons, you'll want to take something designed to handle more adversity.
Three- and Four-Season Tents
For summer, early fall and late spring outings, choose a three-season tent. At minimum, a quality three season tent will have lightweight aluminum poles, a reinforced floor, durable stitching, and a quality rain-fly. Some three-season tents offer more open-air netting and are more specifically designed for summer backpacking and other activities. Many premium tents will feature pre-sealed, taped seams and a silicone-impregnated rain-fly for enhanced waterproofness.
For winter camping or alpine travel, go with a four season model. Because they typically feature more durable fabric coatings, as well as more poles, four-season tents are designed to handle heavy snowfall and high winds without collapsing. Of course, four-season tents exact a weight penalty of about 10 to 20 percent in trade for their strength and durability. They also tend to be more expensive.
Domes and Tunnels
Tents are broadly categorized into two types, freestanding, which can stand up on their own, and those that must be staked down in order to stand upright. Freestanding tents often incorporate a dome-shaped design, and most four-season tents are constructed this way because a dome leaves no flat spots on the outer surface where snow can collect. Domes are also inherently stronger than any other design. Meanwhile, many three-season models employ a modified dome configuration called a tunnel. These are still freestanding, but they require fewer poles than a dome, use less fabric, and typically have a rectangular floor-plan that offers less storage space than a dome configuration. Many one and two-person tents are not freestanding, but they make up for it by being more lightweight. Because they use fewer poles, they can also be quicker to set up than a dome.
Size Matters
Ask yourself how many people you'd like to fit in your fabric hotel now and in the future. For soloists and minimalists, check out one-person tents. If you're a mega-minimalist, or if you have your eye on doing some big wall climbs, a waterproof-breathable bivy sack is the ticket. Some bivy sacks feature poles and stake points to give you a little more breathing room. Also, if you don't need bug protection and you want to save weight, check out open-air shelters.
Families who plan on car camping in good weather can choose from a wide range of jumbo-sized tents that will accommodate all your little ones with room to spare. A wide range of capacities is also available for three- and four-season backpacking and expedition tents. Remember, though, the bigger the tent you buy, the heavier it will be, although it's easy to break up the tent components among several people in your group. It's also helpful to compare the volume and floor-space measurements of models you're considering.

Sierra Designs Lightning XT 1 Tent 1-Person 3-Season Review

Sierra Designs Lightning XT 1 Tent 1-Person 3-SeasonI had a really hard time finding reviews for this tent online, so I took a gamble and ordered it.I'm doing this to hopefully help someone out like me.To be clear, I never used this tent, just set it up to see how it would accommodate me and my gear.First off, it is very light weight. My friends each ordered the Eureka Backcountry and the Sierra Designs Zolo 1, and this tent was by far the lightest. After taking it out of the bag, I realized that the packed dimensions they advertise are not quite right. The tent and everything included is completely capable of compressing down to the size listed, but the bag they provide could easily fit 3 tents in it.This was a big concern for me since I'm limited on space and everything expands when in the bag. After setting up (a little confusing at first, difficult with just one person if you don't stake it down - again, I only set it up a couple of times), I was pretty satisfied with the look.I'm 5'9" and I fit comfortably in it, but any taller than 6' and you could be uncomfortable, especially since the walls are at such an angle. The design with the two poles sort of cutting off makes it seem like you couldn't hang anything of significant weight (like a large light) from the top without deforming the tent (hanging just the dead weight from my arm deformed it by a good 6 -8 inches on the "weak pole" side and an inch or two on the more solid pole side).I'm going to be backpacking for 2 months across Europe and have no idea what kind of weather and wind I will come across, but I think this would be more than okay for most situations. It is a good looking tent, extremely lightweight, and (can be) compact, and priced very well for the features - but I decided to dish out some extra dough for the MSR Hubba because I knew it would be something I would use for years and really like based on all the reviews and recommendations from friends. If you're small and looking for something relatively inexpensive and light, this should work for you. This is just my two cents, I have no idea how the rainfly holds up, ventilation, and durability are since I never used the tent the way it was intended.

Marmot Alpinist Tent 2-Person 4-Season Review

Marmot Alpinist Tent 2-Person 4-SeasonThis tent is extremely easy to setup (even in the pouring rain) and has served us well through all seasons. It has been warm and insulating in very cold temperatures (well below freezing) above 12,000 feet in CO.Although it is a two person tent, it is a little on the small side, but that helps with the minimal weight. Also, if you are looking for a tent with a large vestibule, this is not a tent for you.The vestibule has enough room for two large packs and shoes- that's it.The vents, places to attach biners and lights, and the colors are all nice touches. If your idea of backpacking is roughing it and going fast and light, this is the tent for you- it's just the perfect size and holds up in nasty weather.

Unfortunately while trying to set it up in a hail storm, I was rushing and bent a pole too much- breaking it and the shock cord inside. This sounds like the beginning of a bad review, but it comes with some nice extra pole pieces that we were able to rig so our trip could continue with a standing tent. After getting home and sending it away for free Marmot got a new pole back to us within 4 weeks.Marmot rocks!

Eureka Solo Spitfire UL Tent Review

Eureka Solo Spitfire UL TentThis COULD be an excellent ultralight tent. The tent's strong points are it very light weight ( a previous reviewer stated 2 lbs 13 ounces but that would be the Spitfire, I believe, not the Spitfire UL), it's interior room which is outstanding given the tent's weight, and it's very small packed size ( with a compression stuff sack which it doesn't come with, but should). The downsides to this tent unfortunately outweigh the upsides. It is nearly impossible to get a good, tight, pitch. This causes two problems. One a simple annoyance, the other a showstopper. The first and only night I used this tent in the Trinity Alps Wilderness in northern California I was kept awake most of the night by the noise made by the fly flapping in only a light breeze. No matter how I tried I simply could not get the tent staked down tight enough to stop this. When I woke up the following morning the fly was torn at the foot end. The design concept (A single hoop with 2 "struts" at the foot end)is an excellent weight saving idea, but due to the inabilty to get a tight pitch the fly tends to rub on the struts causing the tearing. But for that deficiency this would be a great tent. To make the best of it I plan to add some reinforcement fabric to the fly at the area of the aforementioned struts at the foot of the fly. I would like to recommend the tent but cannot due to this design flaw. If Eureka would fix this problem this would be a near perfect fair weather, ultralight solo tent.

Product Description:
Perfect for packing out on your own, the ultra-light, silicone-treated Eureka Spitfire UL weighs just over two pounds. It's made from a silicone-treated nylon fabric, which provides quick-drying water protection that meets CPAI-84 F/R requirements. It also has more headroom than most tents in its class, making it very easy and comfortable to sit up in. This one-pole tent sets up quickly, thanks to a durable 8.84 mm DAC Featherlite aluminum frame, clips, and post and grommet corner attachments. It's also extremely well ventilated with large mesh panels--great for stargazing during summer trips.
It has a large side door that makes it easy to get in and out of the tent. The bathtub floor keeps seams taut and high off the ground for superior protection. The full coverage fly features a poke-out vent that's closable and accessible from inside the tent. Side release buckles attach the fly to body for fast easy set up. This tent also features two interior storage pockets.

Kelty Teton 2 Footprint Review

Kelty Teton 2 FootprintIt is exactly tailored to the special shape of the tent--having rings located at the four corners so that the tent's press-fit poles directly connect it to the tent itself--and works very well in protecting the floor of the actual tent as well as keeping it nice and dry.And because it was made to fit the Teton 2 specifically, the footprint is completely hidden once the tent is fully assembled.

While tarps are often used for the same purpose, they can be hard to manage being that they're often big, heavy, noisy and just dowright cumbersome. The footprint, however, is light, cleans and dries easily & quickly, and packs right along with the rest of the tent while in storage.I definitely made the right decision spending the extra $30 and would heavily recommend it to anyone even considering the Teton 2 as a tent purchase.

Losi Gear Loft by Nemo Review

Losi Gear Loft by NemoI have purchased and used gear lofts made for several top name tents (North Face, Mountain Hardwear and Marmot, to name a few), but none were as versatile as NEMO loft for the Losi 2P. It has several pockets, a couple even large enough to store magazines when you're too tired to read any more. If you have a Losi 2P (or Losi 3P), buy the respective gear loft for it because you'll find they'll hold lots of stuff you want close at hand, yet out of the way.

MSR Hubba Hubba Tent Review

MSR Hubba Hubba TentI have owned this tent for three years, and I love it.I have taken it out on about 15 trips from New Mexican Summers to Ohio Winters. It is listed as a three season tent, but it will hold up in anything. The pole design is extremely simple with only one system. It is very easy to set up when using the foot print.Everything just clips into the ends of the poles. It also has numerous connection points for additional tie downs. There is enough room for two grown men, or one and a pack. After using the tent, I can't suggest anything else.

ALPS Mountaineering Mystique 1.0 AL Tent - 1-Person 3-Season Review

ALPS Mountaineering Mystique 1.0 AL Tent - 1-Person 3-SeasonFinally, a one person tent that will actually fit someone that is over 6ft tall!! This tent had ample room, and I'm 6' 3". Easy setup. The weight and size of the tent takes up very little space in your backpack. The only thing that could make this tent better would be to have a little bigger vestibule.

Kelty Gunnison 2 Footprint Review

Kelty Gunnison 2 FootprintI just got back from a 3 day trip to the top of Mt Mitchell in NC. It rained the whole time, and temps were in the 40's F. and windy. The footprint is worth it's weight in silver! It worked great! Not a drop of rain got through my Kelty Gunnison 2.1 Tent and the foot print performed wonderfully. It really will save wear-and-tear on your tent. It's light. It fits perfectly. I wouldn't want to go without it.

Marmot Eos 1-Person 3-Season Tent Review

Marmot Eos 1-Person 3-Season TentBought this tent with foot print for a wilderness trek at the BSA Philmont high adventure camp.Light and easy to pitch and strike.Zippers work fast and with little sticking.Keeps rain out well (if the fly is pulled down well over the ends). The free standing design is great for shaking off rain or dew and drying in the sun before packing up for the trail.Good in the wind. I bought it for the extra shoulder room and fairly large vestibule while maintaining reasonable weight. Complaints include: the orange color attracts bees, flies and yellow jackets; I'm 5' 10" and I find the head space just a tad bit annoying; not enough pockets, no hanging spots (although the two zipper loops if put at the top can double as a hanging spot); the poles don't fold up into a real small smooth package (someday, they may poke though the carry sack); no separate bag for the poles; the vestibule/entry is only on one side, which limits options when selecting sites to pitch the tent; their is no color coding on the tent straps (as claimed in the instructions) to orient the poles with the tent and footprint.I really like this tent. The solo models all have trade-offs.I feel this tent is an excellent balance of size, weight, quality, price, value, and functionality.

The true bathtub floor provides weather protection, and also acts as a splashguard in stormy conditions.

Gigatent Dream Catcher(Size Double) Review

Gigatent Dream Catcher(Size Double)We bought this for my 5 year old son who is obsessed with camping. The set up is easy and the bottom sheet with velcro is easy to wash and use. My unit came with a minor rip in the casing for the poles and needs to be repaired. All in all, a great product for your "little camper."

ALPS Mountaineering Mystique 1.5 -4 by -8 Foot One Person Backpacking Tent Review

ALPS Mountaineering Mystique 1.5 -4 by -8 Foot One Person Backpacking TentI have used this tent once so far on a backpacking trip. The tent is pretty quick and easy to set up but it is diffucult to get the sag out of it between the large pole and the small pole. After I had the rain fly on I was able to pull the large pole forward and have the rain fly keep it in place. This reduced some but not all of the sag. I may have to add a bungee and another stake to solve this issue. It is a good size for one person. A little bigger would be nice but for backpacking sake you want to keep it small and light. I found that this tent rolled up smaller than the factory description. I experienced very light rain during the night in this tent. I had no moisture issues with rain or condensation. Overall I am pretty satisfied.

Product Description:
The Mystique 1.5 utilizes a lightweight 2-pole design with shock corded 7000 series aluminum poles. The walls are a breathable nylon taffeta. The polyester fly and nylon floor are urethane coated, with factory sealed seams for maximum weatherproofness. Entry and exit are easy with 2 doors and 2 vestibules. We have added an additional rear fly zipper for our 2006 models to make getting in and out of your tent even easier. Ventilation is fantastic with the 2 large mesh doors and the end mesh panels. The full coverage fly keeps you dry in even the biggest rain storms and the large vestibules form "porches" to give you places to store extra gear ... and to look outside without getting soaked! A vent is placed on the end of the fly to increase ventilation even further. It has the option of being zipped open or closed, depending upon the weather. Mesh storage pockets are included inside the tent to help you keep track of your small valuables. Instructions are sewn into the tent storage bag so you never have to worry about not having them with you. All stakes and guy ropes are included.
