Wenzel 2008 Windy Pass 0-Degree Mummy Sleeping Bag (Black/Red) Review

Wenzel 2008 Windy Pass 0-Degree Mummy Sleeping BagOk let me start by saying I'm researching survival stuff (best bang for the buck). The one thing I wanted to let people know is you may get cold at zero degrees or 15 degrees but you will be alive the next day, that is something that people get confused on with sleeping bags. Now, after I got this bag out I climbed inside remembering the previous reviews on ripping fabric I carefully zipped it up and could reall feel the bag heating up. Everything was going fine with a little care until I tried to close the top red part around my head with the pull tie.....it ripped, fabric tore, stitching popped, and I was instantly disappointed because of how a few little odd ends can ruin a great product. The bags tearing in certain areas kills the deal for me, I'll try and repair it but don't have alot of faith it will hold together for future use. Find a better bag to buy guys

Product Description:
Wenzel, the original family camping company, has long felt that next to a quality tent, a good sleeping bag is the most important necessity when it comes to enjoying the camping experience. The 33-by-84-inch (W x H) Windy Pass sleeping bag is an affordable, mummy-style bag rated to a chilly zero degrees Fahrenheit. A built-in drawstring hood helps keep body heat in, and 56-ounces of non-allergenci Omega II polyester fill will keep you toasty throughout the night. A full-length three-inch draft tube and five-inch shoulder collar ensure comfort every evening, and the polyester inner and outer layers feature offset quilt construction for maximum warmth and durability. A self-repairing, two-way zipper with anti-snag tape will hold up over years of heavy use. The Windy Pass includes an Oxford stuff sack that compresses with two elastic straps.
About Wenzel Camping Gear
Wenzel, established in 1887 and originally an outfitter for explorers and pioneers, was one of the first family camping equipment companies in America. It's Wenzel's mission to help families remember the times of 10 miles a day, not 75 miles an hour, to spend time listening to chirping birds and babbling brooks, not pinging instant messages and ringing cell phones.
The company seeks to create the modern tools that families require to escape to and reconnect with the great outdoors. Each Wenzel product is run through a very specialized filter--Wenzel employees' families. Wenzel knows what family camping is like, which is why the company makes tents that are easy to set up and take down, sleeping bags that feel big and cozy but pack small, and pads that smooth out the roughest forest floor. Wenzel strives to be an ambassador to the great outdoors, encouraging families to return to the place where memories are made.

Sleep Well: Finding the Right Sleeping Bag
Sleeping bag technology has come a long way from the days of cowboy bedrolls. These days, there are a number of high-tech materials and designs available to keep you warm during the coldest outings. Here's a short list of things to keep in mind when you're shopping for a bag:
Buy for Cold
It's a safe bet that on at least one of your adventures, the nighttime temperature will drop unexpectedly. That's why it's smart to buy a bag that's rated for the lowest possible temperature you expect to face on your camping and backpacking trips. For summer trips, a bag rated at +35 degrees or higher will likely do the trick. If you like to camp in higher elevations in the summer, or if spring and fall outings are in your future, consider bags rated from +10 to +35. Winter adventurers should look for bags in the -10 to +10 range, while those on serious winter alpine climbs and expeditions will want a bag rated lower than -10.
Keep in mind that sleeping bag manufacturers' temperature ratings only estimate the minimum temperature at which the bag will provide warmth. Take these numbers with a grain of salt, as different folks generate different amounts of heat when they sleep. If you're the type who likes to pile on the covers even on warmer nights, go for a bag that's rated ten degrees colder. The opposite is true for "warm" sleepers--a 35-degree bag will probably work for you on a 25-degree night.
Goose or No Goose?
The most important component of any sleeping bag is its insulating material. Modern sleeping bags offer two choices: goose down or synthetic. While both materials have advantages and disadvantages, down bags are considered superior because of their phenomenal warmth-to-weight and warmth-to-bulk ratios. While providing great insulation, down is extremely compressible and light. There's a reason why geese can fly and stay warm through the winter! Down also boasts great long-term durability and will typically retain its insulating properties after years of use.
All of that said, there are many high-quality synthetic bags on the market and synthetic materials are getting better all the time. While a synthetic bag will weigh somewhat more than a down bag at an equivalent temperature rating, synthetic bags perform better when wet. (Yes, the Achilles heel of down is that it loses all insulating properties when wet.) If your trips take you to wet climates, you may want to consider a synthetic bag for this reason alone. Keep in mind, too, that many people are allergic to down--synthetic bags are non-allergenic. Finally, down is considerably more expensive than synthetic, which might tip the balance for adventurers on a budget.
Bags for All Shapes
Sleeping bags come in two basic shapes that reflect their intended use. Mummy-shaped bags offer the best warmth because they conform to the body's contours. This minimizes the amount of body heat the body must put out to maintain a constant temperature. Many mummy bags are offered in women-specific shapes and sizes, as well. Rectangular bags, while they do offer more room to toss and turn, are less thermally efficient because they contain more open air space. Also, they are typically heavier than mummy bags, and are generally not offered with down insulation, making them best suited for car camping or short backpacking trips.
Pad Yourself
No matter what kind of bag you choose, a sleeping pad is a required accessory. Not only do they provide much-needed comfort when sleeping on the ground, pads also offer crucial warmth for your backside, as the weight of your body compresses--and renders virtually useless--the sleeping bag insulation that lies beneath you.

Eddie Bauer® Polyester Fill Mummy Sleeping Bag Review

Eddie Bauer® Polyester Fill Mummy Sleeping BagI purchased this bag from Target a few months ago. It's a great cold-weather bag, I've used it in temps down to 20F and have been very toasty in this thing. The removable top layer gives you nice flexibility, and can be used to augment your sleeping pad on warmer nights or as a pillow. My only issues are that it's a little too heavy for backpacking (but what do you expect from a $50 bag?), and it doesn't come with a compression sack.

Texsport Air Bed with Built-in Pump Review

Texsport Air Bed with Built-in PumpI bought this because it was the lowest priced queen size with battery pump. Here's what I learned:
1.Use only the freshest batteries.Older batteries won't work. The pump will pump but not enough pressure to actually fill the mattress.
2.Inflate only through the built in port.Do not inflate through the side valve. In fact, never open that valve! After several opening and closing, the side valve leaked on me and in an hour or two the mattress completely deflated.
3. Do notuse the side valve to infalte or deflate.See #2.
4. Be very careful getting onto the mattress.Do not step on it, put pressure close to the edge, especially around the built in port area.
5. It gets cold on this mattress.Sleep on a blanket a sleeping bag.
6. Buy only from places with good return policy.I returned my first one to Amazon after it leaked.
7. Study carefully the way it is folded in the box if you ever want to put it back in.
8.If you have the money, spend more and get more with another mattress.

hope this helps,

Coleman Hibernation 40-Degree Rectangular Queen Size Sleeping Bag (Black) Review

Coleman Hibernation 40-Degree Rectangular Queen Size Sleeping BagThe price was excellent. I compared to many websites and local stores, this was by far the best value. The size is huge. My wife and I share and have plenty of room. I am 6' and 240 lbs so I needed width and height. This fits the bill perfect! We also wanted cloth exterior, not poly. Although poly is water proof it also is loud everytime you move and I sweat more in a poly sleeping bag.

Product Description:
Stay warm and comfortable on a pleasant fall evening with the Coleman Hibernation queen-size sleeping bag. The Hibernation, which offers a temperature rating down to 40 degrees F, is filled with 6 pounds of Coletherm insulation. This allows for a greater loft--a measure of the amount of space the insulation occupies and the amount of air the insulation can trap. The insulation's hollow-core fibers work by creating pockets of air that serve as an extra barrier between the sleeper and the environment, thereby maximizing thermal efficiency and keeping the camper snug. Another barrier between a warm camper and the chill of the night is the fabric used in the covers and liners of the bag. The Hibernation features a 100-percent cotton cover and a cozy cotton flannel liner, highly durable materials that function well under diverse conditions. Cotton is hard wearing yet soft, and is appealing to the touch.

Coleman's ComfortSmart technology includes such features as a ThermoLock zipper, a Comfort Cuff, and a ZipPlow tool. Coleman's ComfortSmart Technology
The best way to relax after a big day of camping adventures is to wrap up in a warm sleeping bag and drift off to peaceful sleep. Coleman is so committed to making sure you have reliable and cozy bedding that it backs its Hibernation sleeping bag with its ComfortSmart guarantee--a promise that the bag will deliver all-night comfort. Coleman can make this promise thanks to its third-party, scientifically tested temperature ratings; engineering features that promote thermal efficiency and durability; and the creation of different bag sizes to ensure a comfortable fit.
Coleman developed a number of warmth-enhancing features for its ComfortSmart system. The FiberLock insulation tailoring, for example, is designed to prevent insulation from shifting in the bag and developing thin or cold spots. By keeping the insulation in place, Coleman also lengthens the life of the bag. The ThermoLock feature contributes by reducing heat loss (and cold seepage) through zipper coils. This sets up an additional insulating barrier to stand guard along the length of the zipper, ensuring that the snug feeling campers get when zipping up the bag stays with them through the night. Coleman also added such features as a ZipPlow zipper tool that prevents zipper snags by channeling fabric away from the zipper coils; Zipper Glide tailoring, which makes it silky smooth to zip the bag at the corners; a Comfort Cuff that surrounds your face with softness; a Roll Control function that locks the bag in place for easier rolling; and a Quick Cord for an easy, no-tie closure.
Sizing
The Hibernation is a queen-size sleeping bag, with dimensions of 75 by 66 inches. As a result, the bag sleeps two people at once, or you can separate the top and bottom and create two separate sleeping bags. Designed to fit people under 6-feet tall, the Hibernation is machine washable and carries a five-year warranty.
About Coleman
More than 100 years ago, a young man with an entrepreneurial spirit and a better idea began manufacturing lanterns in Wichita, Kansas. His name was W.C. Coleman, and the company he founded would change life in America. A man plagued with such poor vision he sometimes had to ask classmates to read aloud to him, Coleman saw a brilliant light in 1900 in a drugstore window that stopped him in his tracks. He inquired about the light inside and discovered he was able to read even the small print on a medicine bottle by the illumination. The lamps had mantles, not wicks, and were fueled by gasoline under pressure instead of coal oil. Soon afterward, Coleman started a lighting service that offered a "no light, no pay" clause--a big step forward for merchants who were burned by inferior products that rarely worked--and drew substantial interest from businesses that wanted to keep their lights on after dark.
In the ensuing years, Coleman expanded its product line well beyond lanterns. The company's current catalog is thick with products that make spending time outdoors a pleasure. There are coolers that keep food and drinks cold for days on end, comfortable airbeds that won't deflate during the night, a complete line of LED lights that last for years, powerful portable grills that cook with an authentic open-grill flame, and much, much more. Coleman has truly fashioned much of our outdoor camping experience, and expects to do so for generations to come.

COLEMAN HOOLIGAN 4 - 9' X 7' BACKPACKING TENT Review

COLEMAN HOOLIGAN 4 - 9' X 7' BACKPACKING TENTThis probably has something to do with the fact that it was 90 degrees out over the 4th of July weekend, but this tent seemed to have a hard time venting. It didn't rain, but it looks like it would do a great job keeping water out (assuming the seams are nice and tight). There's plenty of space for two people, but any more than that would be pushing it. I really have no idea how they determine the capacity of tents. Overall, it's not too expensive and is quick to set up; a decent tent.

Coleman Exponent Avior X2 Tent Review

Coleman Exponent Avior X2 TentI have been an outdoors-man for some time and I am particularly happy to have found this tent. For the money, it is everything I could want in a tent.It fits inside my hiking backpack right next to my sleeping bag.It is lightweight, fast and easy to setup, comes with a repair kit, and everything fits back in the bag for once.I was considering a few other tents when I actually got a chance to see this one on the trail at Red River Gorge. I bought it as soon as I got home from that trip.I have used it 4 times this summer and I have found no problems with it.It was a little cold the one morning when the frost was on the outside, but I had a good bag. I really enjoy this tent.

Coleman 6-Person Ara Tent - Green (10'x9') Review

Coleman 6-Person Ara Tent - GreenI bought this hoping to replace my red Ara 4 tent that I purchased at Target. I was looking for a bigger tent, but I still liked the old red design for the most part. From the picture, it looked like there were some improvements from the old model, such as: Bigger, round windows, awning with extended roofline on the front, along with a bigger floor space and taller ceiling. I got the tent and these features were nice, but unfortunately the new features meant that some of the old features were left out. On the Ara 4 (and old red Ara 6 tent), there was an extra pole that held up the front doorway section of the tent, creating more headroom when you enter the tent, expanding the inside space, and making the tent a bit stronger. This tent lacks the pole on the front, and therefore the tent seemed to be slightly weaker and was a bit smaller on the inside than it could have been. On the old tent, there was a small window/opening on the back, near the bottom of the tent that you could use to reach your hand out and maybe grab a soda from an outside cooler, or maybe just use it for ventilation or to look outside. Well, this tent doesn't have it, so there's another negative. The old tent also came with a floormat that went in front of the door, underneath the awning for shoes and what not, but this tent didn't have that either! The back of the tent is almost completely no-see-um mesh, and the rainfly does cover the entire area, but I can almost guarantee that on a cold night, you will get a nasty draft, even if all the windows are closed. Also, the door, in my opinion, is a rather ugly shape, and it is smaller than the door on the old Ara tents, so there's another negative. I even noticed a quality difference when I recieved the tent. There were a few mini puncture-like holes where the seams met at the corners near the bottom of the tent, and I am sure it would leak if it rained. Very unprofessional. Now, the old Ara tents had square windows, which were somewhat irratating, and there wasn't much of a view when the windows were open, but other than that, the old Ara tent was just perfect. I recommend that instead of buying this new Ara 6 tent, go for the old red Ara 4 or Ara 6 tents if you can still find them. Or better yet, see if you can find a tent called the Coleman Mist Trail 6 tent at other sporting goods stores. That one's a keeper. This tent, as long as it doesn't have any holes in the corners, will do nicely as long as you aren't as picky as I am, especially if it's your first tent and you have nothing else to compare to. Otherwise, I would definitely spend your money on something else. I don't know what Coleman was thinking when they designed this. They do make very nice tents, but this one just isn't one of them.

Paha Que' Wilderness Promontory Tent Review

Paha Que' Wilderness Promontory TentWe purchased your Promontory and the TePee. We couldn't be more pleased with the products. My wife and I camp at least 6-7 times a year here in the Indiana State Parks. I have recommended Paha Que products to my co-workers and showed them their catalogue. Their products make the camping experience comfortable and enjoyable. The first time we used them we had thunderstorms and winds for 2 days. They held up with unbelievable performance and kept dry while other campers got soaked. We had a couple of the wet campers ask about Paha Que products and since we carry a catalogue, showed them the product line. We will probably purchase a few more Paha Que accessories in the near future.

Ridgeway By Kelty High Country 3-Person Backpacking Sport Tent Review

Ridgeway By Kelty High Country 3-Person Backpacking Sport TentI bought this at Costco for about $10 cheaper.I used it this weekend at Patapsco Valley State Park in Maryland. It is easy for me to set up alone in just a few minutes, and I'm short. Putting in the side bars is a little tricky and has created a few rips in the nylon sleeve, but it's not a big deal and doesn't affect performance. It rained over the weekend, but I stayed nice and dry.I was a little concerned that the rainfly was a bit small, but it worked very well. The night it rained it was also very humid. The side windows were nice for ventilation. The mesh "loft" is a good size for holding a small lamp. The side mesh pockets were great for holding my glasses and headlamp. The rectangular shape is great for fitting more than one tent on a campsite pad.

I wish it had two doors instead of one.I think it's a little heavy for backpacking, but great for car camping. Also, it's supposedly a 3 person tent, but I'm not sure where the third person would sleep. It's a good size for 1 or 2.

Overall it's a good value for the money.

Coleman Montana Big Sky Elite Tent, 16'x7' Review

Coleman Montana Big Sky Elite Tent, 16'x7'After much research, we decided to purchase this tent to replace our older, smaller tent.We left on vacation shortly after receiving the Big Sky Elite, with only one trial set-up under our belts. The directions were a little vague, but my 14 year old son and I got it set-up in a matter of minutes. The interior is huge.We (2 adults, a 14 yr old and a 4 year old) had plenty of space to spread out.We had a queen size air mattress on one end and the boys had sleeping bags on the other. We had several feet in between for our bags, etc. It was great not having to crawl over anyone to go in and out the door. The light is wonderful. We were able to read with no problems, and it didn't show up super bright outside the tent.Thankfully, the bugs that it attracted weren't able to get into the tent. One night of our vacation it rained steadily. We only had a couple minor seam leaks. If the rain fly was a little larger, it would have taken some of the pressure off the seams. At times, the rain fly would catch so much water, then it would pour it right down the front of the tent.It sounded like it was pouring it right inside. The door was ok, but it could've been a little better. You have to get it just so for the velcro to hold it.There is also some confusion with the way the frame rod is zipped in the door.It is easy to mistakenly get ahold of the wrong zipper when trying to get in the door.
Overall, we had a very good experience with our new Coleman Montana Big Sky Elite tent.We camped for 4 nights near Glacier National Park inMontana and it worked out very well for our family. We give it a solid 4 stars and would recommend it to anyone.

Coleman 12-Inch Metal Tent Stakes (4-Pack) Review

Coleman 12 inch Metal Tent StakesJust bought these a few weeks ago (12 stakes total - 3 sets) for a trip to Joshua Tree, CA.Just returned, in the semi-hard desert sand ALL of them started bending when tapped in (using rubber mallet first, then hammer).8 of them bent 90 degrees at the head.Ended up using the smaller, standard stakes that came with the tent.Very disappointed, as the standard stakes with the plastic tops snap easily as well, but at least the metal parts remain straight and still usable.

Texsport Camouflage Headquarters Square Dome Tent Review

Texsport Camouflage Headquarters Square Dome TentI lived in this tent for the better part of three unseasonably cold and wet summer weeks in Maine.I stayed dry (for the most part) in spite of heavy rains lasting up to eight hours and one severe thunderstorm that lit up the tent's walls like a strobe light.I'll take the blame for any problems: the door was on the (slightly) uphill side, so some water dripped in through the bottom of the door zipper, but only after hours of continuous rain. During the thunderstorm, maybe a dozen drops blew in, not enough to wet the bottom of a shot glass. It was fine in the wind, but I would say that this is a three season tent.

The bug netting is fine, and for the price of one night in a motel, the tent owes me nothing.I outfitted it with boxsprings and a matress from a twin bed and a sturdy table/bench, leaving me plenty of room to stand and change clothes.

I love this tent!
