NEW OLIVE 4 SEASON 7X7 BACKPACK DOME, ALUMINUM POLES, 2 DOORS By Trek Review

NEW OLIVE 4 SEASON 7X7 BACKPACK DOME, ALUMINUM POLES, 2 DOORS By TrekI received the tent yesterday, and decided to `field test' it in our backyard. The tent was simple to erect, I was especially impressed by the quality of the tent poles (not your cheap fiberglass, but quality machined aluminum) and how the tent was super-compact and lightweight. The temperature plunged to 39 degrees F, and we were very comfortable inside (wearing t-shirts and shorts with only a light blanket. The relative humidity was 97%, yet the ventilation inside is well-designed and there was almost no condensation. I definitely will feel comfortable taking this tent on extended backpacking trips in all sorts of weather. Will probably purchase several others for the kids.

Sierra Designs Sirius 2 Person Three-Season Tent Review

Sierra Designs Sirius 2 Person Three-Season TentI've only used it once, but i was camping (in the sierras no less) during 2 days of hard rain. When I was cleaning up the site I noticed that I sizeable puddle had formed underneath my tent and very little water got inside. Very pleased overall with the tent.

Yellowstone Review

Yellowstonenot a completely bad product if you dont care about other tents out there that could be much more satisfying. For a two person it had enough room but it is not free standing meaning you need to hammer in the stakes in order for it to set up, the stakes are cheap and would probably bend after being used a couple times, and the fabric isnt all that great either. I didnt actually use it. I returned it because it wasnt ideal for backpacking. If you want to spend money on a tent for 2 buy the big agnes tents. Expensive, but pro status. oh yeah and the poles on the tent were the only nice thing about it. All packed up its about two feet across which would stick out to wide on a pack.

COLEMAN HOOLIGAN 4 - 9' X 7' BACKPACKING TENT Review

COLEMAN HOOLIGAN 4 - 9' X 7' BACKPACKING TENTThis probably has something to do with the fact that it was 90 degrees out over the 4th of July weekend, but this tent seemed to have a hard time venting. It didn't rain, but it looks like it would do a great job keeping water out (assuming the seams are nice and tight). There's plenty of space for two people, but any more than that would be pushing it. I really have no idea how they determine the capacity of tents. Overall, it's not too expensive and is quick to set up; a decent tent.

Marmot Alpinist Tent 2-Person 4-Season Review

Marmot Alpinist Tent 2-Person 4-SeasonThis tent is extremely easy to setup (even in the pouring rain) and has served us well through all seasons. It has been warm and insulating in very cold temperatures (well below freezing) above 12,000 feet in CO.Although it is a two person tent, it is a little on the small side, but that helps with the minimal weight. Also, if you are looking for a tent with a large vestibule, this is not a tent for you.The vestibule has enough room for two large packs and shoes- that's it.The vents, places to attach biners and lights, and the colors are all nice touches. If your idea of backpacking is roughing it and going fast and light, this is the tent for you- it's just the perfect size and holds up in nasty weather.

Unfortunately while trying to set it up in a hail storm, I was rushing and bent a pole too much- breaking it and the shock cord inside. This sounds like the beginning of a bad review, but it comes with some nice extra pole pieces that we were able to rig so our trip could continue with a standing tent. After getting home and sending it away for free Marmot got a new pole back to us within 4 weeks.Marmot rocks!

Two features matter most in the mountains: strength, and low weight. The Marmot Alpinist 2-Person 4-Season Tent delivers both to alpine climbers and mountaineers. Though this single-wall Marmot tent weighs only 4lb 15oz, it's three-pole design holds tough against burly mountain storms. The Alpinist Tent's steep walls shed snow to prevent a collapse while also increasing living space inside your winter haven. Factory-taped, waterproof breathable MemBrain fabric protects against rains or snow while reducing internal condensation. The Marmot Alpinist Tent also includes a stowable vestibule for extra dry storage space.

Black Diamond Skylight Tent 3-Person 3-Season Review

Black Diamond Skylight Tent 3-Person 3-SeasonThis tent has a very nice design, and is very light. It stands strong in moderate winds and rain. I would have rated it 4.5 stars if it wasn't for the seams that are not taped or factory sealed. For a tent in this price range I would have expected a tent ready to use out of the box.
I use it mostly in sea kayak trips, along with a Golite Hex 3.

Product Description:
The amazingly versatile Black Diamond Skylight 3-Person 3-Season Tent is equally at home in pouring west coast rain or sweltering desert heat. This tent so impressed the editors at Outside Magazine that they gave it the 2006 Gear of the Year Award. When the weather assures a tent-bound day, the EPIC canopy fabric fights off the water and provides excellent breathability. Stash your packs under the vestibule to keep them dry while you play cards inside. When the weather is so hot that you're afraid of melting, pull back the attached fly to expose the mesh half canopy of the Black Diamond Skylight Tent. This ability to drastically adjust ventilation makes the Skylight and excellent choice for nearly any weather short of winter storms.

GoLite Shangri-La 2 Shelter Tent Review

GoLite Shangri-La 2 Shelter TentA great tent for the light weight backpacker. Pros - the tent is light and folds up small. The set up is a little tricky because you are dealing with stakes to hold the tent down. This is more of a rain fly than a tent. There is NO BOTTOM for this tent. They sell a separate bottom for this model or you can buy the bug-screen insert that fits perfectly inside this tent. You can use trekking-poles to hold it up the tent, however this sucks because once you go inside the tent in limits the amount of space you have and you are always fearful of knocking down one or both of the trekking-poles and down comes they tent with you in it. I like to use the corner loops and tie the tent to a tree using string or rope. This way you have more room and you can roll over in the night without worry of bringing down the house. What I don't like about the tent besides the trekking pole thing is you need to stake down the tent to have it work properly and you really need to be in a place that has some place to hang the tent. Another words this tent is not very useful if you are in a place that has a hard ground where stakes don't work and/or a place that has no trees to hang up the tent. One more thing, it really helps to buy a light weight tarp for this tent to sit on. My 6'-8" friend used this tent for five nights while hiking in the Sespe wilderness in 2010. It was the first time he had a back packing tent that actually fit him. This tent can easily and comfortably hold two people and two backpacks, or one giant person like SHAQ.

Product Description:
The innovative, ultra-lite GoLite Shangri-La 2 backcountry shelter delivers serious weather protection for 4-season use and unparalleled space-to-weight ratio with superb durability. It can be used by itself, with the Shangri-La 2 Floor, or with the Shangri-La 2 Nest inner bug tent (note that it doesn't come with a floor). Large enough for two sleepers, this ultra-lite dual-peak design can be pitched with your trekking poles, over paddles or ski poles, or hang it from branches via its top loops.
The reflective stake out loops keep you from tripping in the middle of the night and the hydrophilic thread at the seams expand when wet--sealing the seams and eliminating the need for liquid sealant. The Shangri-La 2 provides 49 square feet of protected interior space. Dual roof vents allow air to circulate and combat condensation build-up. Six Y-stakes, a stake sack, and tent stuff sack are included.
The ultra-lite waterproof SilLite fabric of the Shangri-La 2 sheds both rain and snow, making the Shangri-La 2 surprisingly weather-resistant. Silicone-elastomere fabrics allow their fibers to stretch without separating or breaking, and this makes them stronger than conventional PU-coated (or PU/siliconized) fabrics for a far lower weight. Silicone impregnation means that the silicone completely permeates the fibers and also makes the fabric hydrophobic, so it doesn't soak up water and gain weight.
Specifications:

    Usage: 3- to 4-season backpacking

Kelty Teton 2 Footprint Review

Kelty Teton 2 FootprintIt is exactly tailored to the special shape of the tent--having rings located at the four corners so that the tent's press-fit poles directly connect it to the tent itself--and works very well in protecting the floor of the actual tent as well as keeping it nice and dry.And because it was made to fit the Teton 2 specifically, the footprint is completely hidden once the tent is fully assembled.

While tarps are often used for the same purpose, they can be hard to manage being that they're often big, heavy, noisy and just dowright cumbersome. The footprint, however, is light, cleans and dries easily & quickly, and packs right along with the rest of the tent while in storage.I definitely made the right decision spending the extra $30 and would heavily recommend it to anyone even considering the Teton 2 as a tent purchase.

MSR Hubba Hubba Tent Review

MSR Hubba Hubba TentI have owned this tent for three years, and I love it.I have taken it out on about 15 trips from New Mexican Summers to Ohio Winters. It is listed as a three season tent, but it will hold up in anything. The pole design is extremely simple with only one system. It is very easy to set up when using the foot print.Everything just clips into the ends of the poles. It also has numerous connection points for additional tie downs. There is enough room for two grown men, or one and a pack. After using the tent, I can't suggest anything else.

Amazon.com Tent Guide
Selecting a Tent
Fortunately, there are all kinds of tents for weekend car campers, Everest expeditions, and everything in-between. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
Expect the Worst
In general, it's wise to choose a tent that's designed to withstand the worst possible conditions you think you'll face. For instance, if you're a summer car camper in a region where weather is predictable, an inexpensive family or all purpose tent will likely do the trick--especially if a vehicle is nearby and you can make a mad dash for safety when bad weather swoops in! If you're a backpacker, alpine climber or bike explorer, or if you like to car camp in all seasons, you'll want to take something designed to handle more adversity.
Three- and Four-Season Tents
For summer, early fall and late spring outings, choose a three-season tent. At minimum, a quality three season tent will have lightweight aluminum poles, a reinforced floor, durable stitching, and a quality rain-fly. Some three-season tents offer more open-air netting and are more specifically designed for summer backpacking and other activities. Many premium tents will feature pre-sealed, taped seams and a silicone-impregnated rain-fly for enhanced waterproofness.
For winter camping or alpine travel, go with a four season model. Because they typically feature more durable fabric coatings, as well as more poles, four-season tents are designed to handle heavy snowfall and high winds without collapsing. Of course, four-season tents exact a weight penalty of about 10 to 20 percent in trade for their strength and durability. They also tend to be more expensive.
Domes and Tunnels
Tents are broadly categorized into two types, freestanding, which can stand up on their own, and those that must be staked down in order to stand upright. Freestanding tents often incorporate a dome-shaped design, and most four-season tents are constructed this way because a dome leaves no flat spots on the outer surface where snow can collect. Domes are also inherently stronger than any other design. Meanwhile, many three-season models employ a modified dome configuration called a tunnel. These are still freestanding, but they require fewer poles than a dome, use less fabric, and typically have a rectangular floor-plan that offers less storage space than a dome configuration. Many one and two-person tents are not freestanding, but they make up for it by being more lightweight. Because they use fewer poles, they can also be quicker to set up than a dome.
Size Matters
Ask yourself how many people you'd like to fit in your fabric hotel now and in the future. For soloists and minimalists, check out one-person tents. If you're a mega-minimalist, or if you have your eye on doing some big wall climbs, a waterproof-breathable bivy sack is the ticket. Some bivy sacks feature poles and stake points to give you a little more breathing room. Also, if you don't need bug protection and you want to save weight, check out open-air shelters.
Families who plan on car camping in good weather can choose from a wide range of jumbo-sized tents that will accommodate all your little ones with room to spare. A wide range of capacities is also available for three- and four-season backpacking and expedition tents. Remember, though, the bigger the tent you buy, the heavier it will be, although it's easy to break up the tent components among several people in your group. It's also helpful to compare the volume and floor-space measurements of models you're considering.

Kelty Gunnison 2 Footprint Review

Kelty Gunnison 2 FootprintI just got back from a 3 day trip to the top of Mt Mitchell in NC. It rained the whole time, and temps were in the 40's F. and windy. The footprint is worth it's weight in silver! It worked great! Not a drop of rain got through my Kelty Gunnison 2.1 Tent and the foot print performed wonderfully. It really will save wear-and-tear on your tent. It's light. It fits perfectly. I wouldn't want to go without it.

Sierra Designs Lightning XT 3 Tent 3-Person 3-Season Review

Sierra Designs Lightning XT 3 Tent 3-Person 3-SeasonI have been using a North Face Starfire (tunnel-dome style) tent for 12 years on backpacking and a few car-camping trips with zero complaints - at least until my wife and I got a black lab dog.Quarters were cozy for the two of us, but for the three of us it was downright cramped. So we purchased this Sierra Designs Lightning XT tent for our backpacking outings to have extra room for our dog and gear.We like to hike, camp, and backpack year round in Idaho, so we get everything from 100 degree heat (for a few weeks, anyways) to wet and rainy Spring and Fall seasons, to 10 or 12 feet of snow.It is all usually accompanied by wind of some form or another. We haven't put three people in it, so I can't speak for whether or not it is a roomy 3 person tent, but it sure is a comfy and spacious 2 man tent, even with the dog.

The tent is super light weight; it packs down to the same size and weighs about the same as my North Face 2 man tent.Splitting it between two people makes even better and not at all bulky or heavy in a pack. The tent is almost entirely mesh, which my wife really likes on starry nights, with a bathtub style waterproof bottom. The rainfly is coated nylon and comes down just an inch or two shy of the ground with two vestibules, since there are two doors on the tent.It hooks in to the tent corners where the tent poles hook in, as well clips on to the poles for added stability.Setting the poles up is different than other tents I've used, but seems like it will hold up well in sub-hurricane winds. It is easier to do with two people, but it can be set up by one person if needs be.The tent doesn't have sleeves for the poles, there are just clips every foot or so which seems a little less bomb-proof than my North Face tent, but I haven't had any problems. The poles are hubbed, which also seems a bit less bomb-proof, but the major loads and stresses placed on the poles doesn't go through the hubs so I don't think it will be an issue in the future. The third less bomb-proof item is the fabric - its a little lighter and thinner than my North Face tent to save on weight and bulk. However, the poles, fabric, and clips are all very high quality, so I seriously doubt that I will have any issues with reliability or durability with this tent.

The idea to use Jake's Feet connectors, hubbed poles, and a full mesh top aren't brand new, and most of the big manufacturers buil tents this way.So I figure I won't knock the design unless I really do have a problem.Hence, it still get's 5 stars because it is a high quality, spacious, and VERY light and packable tent. Overall, I'm very pleased with the tent and expect years of service out of it without any issues.

Big Agnes Seedhouse Tent 3 Person Md: TSH3 Review

Big Agnes Seedhouse Tent 3 Person Md: TSH3We love this tent. In fact, after our little family of three grew to a family of 5, we opted just to buy another one just like it rather than buy a 6 man tent. Our little ones are ecstatic about having their own tent. It is easy to set up, and packs very small for backpacking and storage. Can't say enough good things about it.

High Peak Endero Waterproofing Tent - 2500mm Review

High Peak Endero Waterproofing Tent - 2500mmThis tent is light and rolls up easily with a good waterproof floor so no footprint is needed. The rain fly is a bit short, which in my view means this tent is not truly 4 season. It is relatively easy to set up, except it is quite challenging to thread the poles into the sleeves. I recommend buying a tent with an external frame rigging to avoid that difficulty. It was very sturdy against sustained 40 mph winds in Patagonia. The biggest problem with this tent (and the reason I rated it low) is because the pole and stake grommets were so badly crimped that most came out on first use. It also appears the zipper fabric will begin to tear after continued use because the fabric is quite thin and the fibers were beginning to separate after a couple of set ups. Still it is a good value for occasional use (if you don't mind replacing the grommets).

ALPS Mountaineering Zephyr 1.0 1-Person 3-Season Tent Review

ALPS Mountaineering Zephyr 1.0 1-Person 3-Season TentOn the advice of someone who owns a fleet of tents for commercial use I purchased this tent from the Alps Company. It was about $80 less than comparable freestanding solos from MSR, Big Agnes, and Mountain Hardwear. Despite the price difference, this tent is of the same quality as far as materials, workmanship, and design go. I was under the impression that Alps just copied others designs and that they saved their money in R&D. But this tent disproves that. The design is extremely practical. They took a simple timeless design with the two crossing poles and made a huge improvement to it just by adding an elbow resulting in more headroom where your head goes rather than in the middle of the tent where it is wasted. The innovative designs of the MSR Hubba or BA Seedhouse are great, but I really think this more basic modification performs equally as well. I know MSR used to provide the 3-sided stakes with some of their tents and that may be the only thing that is clearly superior to this Alps, which just provides your basic aluminum needle stakes.

The Zepyr 1 is roomier than I expected. Though you couldn't fit 2 sleeping bags side by side but I do think you could sleep two friendly people in here on a dry night. The Zephyr narrows slightly at the feet and leaves plenty of room for one person and some belongings. The vestibule is smaller than expected but should be adequate for a single pack. The Zephyr 1 requires the fly to have two included 12 inch guy wires attached to the bottom of the fly on each side in order to pull the fly from the body. With these in tack the fly did not touch the body anywhere, clearing by an average of about 2 inches. The poles have male fitting on the end and slide through eyelets attached to webbing on each corner. Fly attaches to each corner with adjustable side release buckles. A two piece spreader pole fits in above the door. Alps thoughtfully used a smaller diameter pole for this as it is non load bearing.

My first night in the Zephyr it rained lightly (1/2 of an inch in about 3 hours) and I stayed completely dry. This was in central Florida where humidity is high and condensation occurs every morning. I could feel only the slightest amount of moisture in the cotton teeshirt that was acting as my pillow. There was a bit of water pooling in the triangle created by the intersecting main poles and the spreader bar (maybe 10 mL), but nothing to be concerned about.

In sum, this has surpassed my expectations and it is definitely comparable to the products of the big gear companies. A bit heavier than a Big Agnes Seedhouse SL or a MSR Hubba but cost is 70% and 60% less respectively. I am convinced the price differential is not due to quality or R&D, but is instead due to the advertising campaigns of MSR, The North Face, and even Big Agnes these days. When you buy a Hubba you are paying for 2 page spreads in Outside and Backpacker. I will buy Alps again.

Product Description:
There are some serious benefits to tenting alone. For one, a single-person tent weighs a lot less than a two-person tent. You also don't have to worry about getting steam-rolled at four AM or warding off your homesick tentmate's wandering hands. At under four pounds, the Alps Mountaineering Zephyr 1.0 Tent barely affects the scales, but offers heavy-duty protection against bugs and wet weather. All-mesh walls guarantee ventilation during muggy summer nights, while the urethane-coated, seam-sealed fly blocks precipitation. Two aircraft-grade aluminum poles set up with simple clips and provide strong, lightweight stability.

Mutha Hubba 3 Person Tent Review

Mutha Hubba 3 Person TentI bought this tent a few years ago and have nothing but kind things to say about it.

1.)It's sorta light.Considering its size, it's sorta light, probably around 7 pounds when you include the footprint (not included.)Considering how voluminous this thing is, I really don't mind the extra ounces.

2.)It's freakin' huge.Seriously, this thing is the airplane hanger of small tents. The way the poles pull this thing apart, there is just tons of headroom in this then.Maybe it's a character defect of mine, but I get a little uneasy being in confined areas, like when you're trying to get a pair of pants on in a tent and you're banging your head against a wall/ceiling.I've never had a problem like that in this tent.Seriously, it's gigantic.I'll bet if you took a ratio of square footage to cubic footage, this one would win by a mile.

3.)It's mostly screen. No more riding out humid, still nights. With all-around screen, whatever little wind is around -will- pass through your tent.My last tent had a clever wind-flow system so that you had to position the tent just right with respect to the wind to catch any breeze.Never again!

4.)It's easy to use. It's a snap to put up and the rain fly is very easy to deal with. The doors are very intuitive and easy to get in and out of.It's really a no brainer. The only challenge is reading the directions the first few times to figure out when, where and how the poles go in.After that, it's smooth sailing.

5.)It's lasting quite well.I've had this for three years now and we camp regularly in it, even in the snow.So far, no stitches have popped, all the zippers are cherry and as far as I can tell, there isn't even any abrasion on it.My guess is that the rain fly has faded a bit, but I would have to compare it to a fresh one.Other than that, I'm quite surprised at how well this is holding up.

This is a really great tent.My -only- complaint is that the vestibules really cannot hold that much stuff. When this is billed as a "three person tent" I'd say there is no theoretical way to fit three campers and all of their stuff into this tent. For the two of us, however, this tent is just perfect.

Coleman Hooligan 3 Tent Review

Coleman Hooligan 3 TentI purchased the Coleman Hooligan 3 for car camping and used it for the first time this past weekend.I did not purchase through Amazon as I found it locally for $20 off, but I feel the Amazon price is fair and would not hesitate recommending it at the current price ($79.99 on 28 Jul 2009).

The first thing I did upon bring it home was un-pack it and set it up, followed closely by applying a silicon water repellant spray to the entire rain fly. This is imperative, especially with a tent at this relatively low price point, since factory waterproofing often leaves much to be desired.

Setup was quite simple and pretty quick.I set it up alone during the at-home shake down, but had my fiancée to help at the campsite over the weekend. It does go a little faster with two, but it's very doable solo. The poles are typical fiberglass with shockcord and insert into sleeves on the tent; I would have preferred clip-on hooks rather than sleeves so the tent can be erected after you bend the poles individually, but for the price of this tent it's acceptable.

The tent itself is composed mostly of screen material with a door on one side and a small zip open vent on the other. If you want any kind of privacy at all, the rain fly needs to be on the tent at all times. The floor of the tent is made up of heavy duty plastic tarp material and looks like it will hold up well if taken care of.The floor of the tent is large enough for a Intex® Camp Air Bed with Pump with about a foot of room to spare on two edges if you push it into the corner. With a smaller air mattress or just sleeping bags you would easily have room for a substantial amount of gear if you kept it to two full-size occupants.

The rain fly goes over the tent and covers it pretty much to the ground. There are no windows, save the entryway and a small ventilation opening opposite, but it's not really big enough to be considered a window.Don't expect to have much of a view from inside the tent. The rain fly attaches by hooks at the corners of the tent (rings where the tent poles attach) and hook-and-loop strips which wrap around the poles to keep it aligned. The system works pretty well, but could certainly be better, though that would raise the price of the tent.

One of the key features of the tent, at least for my application, is the vestibule. This was a rather important item for me as I bought this tent for family camping and wanted to be able to put a porta-potty nearby for my fiancée and three year old daughter to use in the night without traipsing all about the wilderness.I haven't actually used it for this yet, as the campground we stayed at had facilities very nearby, but based on the amount of space it should work out fine.Aside from the potty, it also makes an idea place to store shoes and any wet items that shouldn't come into the tent itself. We had a small (15 gal) tote and a couple pairs of shoes out there and still had more than enough room to get in and out of the tent. There is no floor in the vestibule, but I remedied that by getting a ground cloth that was a bit larger than the footprint of the tent and using the excess to form the floor.Works great and helps keep the inside of the tent free of dirt and mud while keeping your shoes nice and dry.

Our first night out in the tent it thunder stormed pretty hard; we were confined to the tent for almost an hour and were unable to converse with our friends (in their tent no more than 10' away) over the rain, even when shouting. The tent held up to it great, though how much of that is due to the tent and how much the extra waterproofing I can't say. There were a couple of very small drips, but nothing that would have ruined our night had it continued raining.I intend to touch up the waterproofing before our next outing in two weeks and this should solve the drips, hopefully.VERY impressed with this tent in wet conditions, overall.

One thing to be aware of is that the entry into the vestibule is relatively low and somewhat small.I am average height (67" 170 lbs) and had no trouble getting in and out, but someone a bit larger and/or less spry might have problems getting in and out.

A couple of issues:

The stakes are cheap aluminum and will bend if you are trying to drive them into hard soil.I bought a 4 pack of nail-style steel stakes and used them for the corners of the tent and they worked out fine.I will be getting a few more to use for staking out the vestibule and the guy lines for the rain fly as well, but for light-duty camping in good weather and soft soil you might be able to get away with the cheap factory stakes.

There is a small pole that holds the ventilation opening open that I had trouble with as it kept popping through the grommet meant to hold it in place. Not a big deal, and only took a second to fix, but annoying none-the-less.I'll rig something up to prevent this next time we go out, should be a simple matter of a small washer or a swatch of cloth.

Overall I am very happy with the tent, especially since I found mine on sale.It has a few quirks, but will work for me until I save up enough for a nicer tent and probably a while after that too.It sets up and packs away easily and would be difficult to beat for the price.Don't forget to waterproof, it is VERY VERY worth the time and money to keep yourself (and your stuff) dry.
