Coleman Exponent Heka X2 Tent Review

You can get this tent a whole lot cheaper at the Coleman online outlet at their website. That's where they sell the products they don't manufacture anymore but still have in inventory. I got mine for seventy.I just received mine yesterday and I haven't camped in this exact tent yet, but as soon as I do try it out I'll give a field review of it. However I HAVEcamped in one owned by a friend before and it held up to some pretty foul weather with no problems at all. Plus, for the price, I don't know how you can beat it!

The rainfly is great and features two good sized "kickstand" vents in the top rear, great for keeping it cooler when you're stuck in the rain during the hot months. Doesn't turn into a sauna with those vents.

My only real gripe is the "Integrated groundsheet that can be zipped on and off". Mine didn't come with one. There's no zipper anywhere near the floor either, so it doesn't even look like it was meant to have one. Not a big deal, as I always make a custom ground sheet for all my tents anyway. Having the integrated ground sheet would have been nice, but not really a deal maker or breaker in my decision to purchase this tent.

The front vestibule does zip on and off however. You could remove it to lighten your load a little, butI plan on having it attached all the time for the protection, privacy and storage.

The poles are VERY nice. I love aluminum poles as opposed to the fiberglass poles.

There's a pretty fair amount of room on the inside as well. It's a two man, but I consider it a one man with room for some stuff.I can easily sit up and move about. Not claustrophobic at all. With the fly off, there's plenty of mesh for stargazing and catching a breeze. Two decent sized storage pockets on either side are nice, too.

Tent also comes with a handy little repair kit. Nice of them I suppose.

One more gripe that I forgot about: I don't like the pole sleeves on this (or any other) tent. I would much rather just use clips than have to fiddle around with pole sleeves. They just snag and make you mad.

But all in all, and especially for the price I got, I think this tent is a real winner.

Coleman 6-Person Ara Tent - Green (10'x9') Review

I bought this hoping to replace my red Ara 4 tent that I purchased at Target. I was looking for a bigger tent, but I still liked the old red design for the most part. From the picture, it looked like there were some improvements from the old model, such as: Bigger, round windows, awning with extended roofline on the front, along with a bigger floor space and taller ceiling. I got the tent and these features were nice, but unfortunately the new features meant that some of the old features were left out. On the Ara 4 (and old red Ara 6 tent), there was an extra pole that held up the front doorway section of the tent, creating more headroom when you enter the tent, expanding the inside space, and making the tent a bit stronger. This tent lacks the pole on the front, and therefore the tent seemed to be slightly weaker and was a bit smaller on the inside than it could have been. On the old tent, there was a small window/opening on the back, near the bottom of the tent that you could use to reach your hand out and maybe grab a soda from an outside cooler, or maybe just use it for ventilation or to look outside. Well, this tent doesn't have it, so there's another negative. The old tent also came with a floormat that went in front of the door, underneath the awning for shoes and what not, but this tent didn't have that either! The back of the tent is almost completely no-see-um mesh, and the rainfly does cover the entire area, but I can almost guarantee that on a cold night, you will get a nasty draft, even if all the windows are closed. Also, the door, in my opinion, is a rather ugly shape, and it is smaller than the door on the old Ara tents, so there's another negative. I even noticed a quality difference when I recieved the tent. There were a few mini puncture-like holes where the seams met at the corners near the bottom of the tent, and I am sure it would leak if it rained. Very unprofessional. Now, the old Ara tents had square windows, which were somewhat irratating, and there wasn't much of a view when the windows were open, but other than that, the old Ara tent was just perfect. I recommend that instead of buying this new Ara 6 tent, go for the old red Ara 4 or Ara 6 tents if you can still find them. Or better yet, see if you can find a tent called the Coleman Mist Trail 6 tent at other sporting goods stores. That one's a keeper. This tent, as long as it doesn't have any holes in the corners, will do nicely as long as you aren't as picky as I am, especially if it's your first tent and you have nothing else to compare to. Otherwise, I would definitely spend your money on something else. I don't know what Coleman was thinking when they designed this. They do make very nice tents, but this one just isn't one of them.

Coleman Weathermaster 7-person Screened Tent Review

This tent is as advertised. I can add some personal experiences to this tent. Set up was simple, very roomy (2 adults, 2 kids), with more than enough height to stand up in. The roll up "springs" are a great idea, worked like a charm. I have to say the best part was the rigid door. Getting out in the middle of the night in the dark was as simple as if you were at home. No fumbling for zippers, no waking the family, a gentle push and the door opens right up. I noticed the screened in porch has drainage built in - excellent design.I can speak from experience that this tent can withstand sustained 20mph winds, and gusts to 25mph without giving in.
Packing the tent away was as easy as a small backpacking tent (minus the weight). All in all I would recommend this tent for those who like a large tent with a screened in porch. This is the one. Now how about some built in lights?

Ridgeway By Kelty High Country 3-Person Backpacking Sport Tent Review

I bought this at Costco for about $10 cheaper.I used it this weekend at Patapsco Valley State Park in Maryland.It is easy for me to set up alone in just a few minutes, and I'm short. Putting in the side bars is a little tricky and has created a few rips in the nylon sleeve, but it's not a big deal and doesn't affect performance.It rained over the weekend, but I stayed nice and dry.I was a little concerned that the rainfly was a bit small, but it worked very well.The night it rained it was also very humid.The side windows were nice for ventilation.The mesh "loft" is a good size for holding a small lamp.The side mesh pockets were great for holding my glasses and headlamp.The rectangular shape is great for fitting more than one tent on a campsite pad.

I wish it had two doors instead of one.I think it's a little heavy for backpacking, but great for car camping.Also, it's supposedly a 3 person tent, but I'm not sure where the third person would sleep.It's a good size for 1 or 2.

Overall it's a good value for the money.

I absolutely love this tent.If your looking for something lightweight and compactible, this is it.It's so easy to set up and super easy to take down and put back into its carrying bag. The materials are the same as whatr you would get with any expensive high-end tent.I fit in this tent just fine with my girlfriend. Coleman Montana Big Sky Elite Tent, 16'x7' Review

After much research, we decided to purchase this tent to replace our older, smaller tent.We left on vacation shortly after receiving the Big Sky Elite, with only one trial set-up under our belts.The directions were a little vague, but my 14 year old son and I got it set-up in a matter of minutes.The interior is huge.We (2 adults, a 14 yr old and a 4 year old) had plenty of space to spread out.We had a queen size air mattress on one end and the boys had sleeping bags on the other.We had several feet in between for our bags, etc. It was great not having to crawl over anyone to go in and out the door.The light is wonderful.We were able to read with no problems, and it didn't show up super bright outside the tent.Thankfully, the bugs that it attracted weren't able to get into the tent.One night of our vacation it rained steadily.We only had a couple minor seam leaks.If the rain fly was a little larger, it would have taken some of the pressure off the seams.At times, the rain fly would catch so much water, then it would pour it right down the front of the tent.It sounded like it was pouring it right inside.The door was ok, but it could've been a little better.You have to get it just so for the velcro to hold it.There is also some confusion with the way the frame rod is zipped in the door.It is easy to mistakenly get ahold of the wrong zipper when trying to get in the door.
Overall, we had a very good experience with our new Coleman Montana Big Sky Elite tent.We camped for 4 nights near Glacier National Park inMontana and it worked out very well for our family.We give it a solid 4 stars and would recommend it to anyone.

Coleman Exponent Kraz X1 Tent Review

First off, let me tell you I'm a Boy Scout, and I used this on a recent campout. That campout was not your ordinary campout, it rained 2 to 3 inches during that time, which is not very ordinary. However, I was in this tent, and it stayed remarkably dry while other campers had an inch or so of water in their tent.
While we were setting up our tents, it started raining. But, because this tent is so easy and fast to set up, I had it set up before a drop of rain had fallen in it.
I stored my gear in the porch (there's some other fancy name for it, but whatever), and it also stayed really dry.
Speaking of gear, I stowed a bunch of it in a handy little pocket in the head of the tent, which I really turned out loving.
My favorite part about this tent is that the rainfly is an inch or so away from the mesh in some places, so the condensation would stick on the rainfly instead of on the walls of my tent like in my other tent, a mammoth 3 man.
The only thing I don't like about this tent is that you really can't move in and out of it at lighting speeds like in an average 2 to 3 man dome tent, as with this tent you have to go throught the rainfly and the mesh.
Another nice thing about this tent is that when I pack it its bag, there's still room for my ground cloth! Hooray! I love that. However, I did have to make my own ground cloth. That was easy, though.
Since I've bought this tent, they've renamed it, which makes no sense; the old name was better.
Anyywayyy, this is the best tent I've ever had!

Embark 9 Person Cabin Tent With Screen Porch - 14'x15' Review

We bought this because we needed a big tent for our family of 5.I treated the rain fly with water-proofer.First of all, the set up is very easy, with color-coded poles and tent slide-throughs.The poles are typical fiber glass and steel.It took me about 20 minutes, with whatever "help" 7-year-old twin boys give. Second-- It's very roomy inside. Enough for a queen-sized air mattress and three smaller ones.I like the flimsy room divider because it's great for privacy while changing clothes.I doubt we'll use it as an actual room divider while sleeping.It rained the first night and rain did not get into the tent or the screen porch (wasn't a huge rain storm). Next time we camp, I'll bring a tarp to use as the floor of the screen porch, as it doesn't have a floor. They mfg recommends a smaller tarp for under the tent itself. Take-down was easy and it actually fit into the bag when we were done. We've only used it once, so I don't know how it'll hold up over the long haul.Overall, I think this is a great tent for the price.

Coleman Evanston 6 Tent Review

This is a nice tent that comfortably accomodated two adults and two children. It was fairly easy to set up and has helpful features with a vestibule awning to divert rain. The only negative is that the loops through which the external tent poles pass are not reinforced in any way. So I already have a slight tear on one of them after using it the first time. You have to be very careful passing the poles through the fabric. Overall it is very light and seems a bit fragile. But for the price, and with care, it will be a very good tent for us and our grandchildren. I would definitely recommend setting it up on a tarp.

Coleman Hooligan 3 Tent Review

I purchased the Coleman Hooligan 3 for car camping and used it for the first time this past weekend.I did not purchase through Amazon as I found it locally for $20 off, but I feel the Amazon price is fair and would not hesitate recommending it at the current price ($79.99 on 28 Jul 2009).

The first thing I did upon bring it home was un-pack it and set it up, followed closely by applying a silicon water repellant spray to the entire rain fly.This is imperative, especially with a tent at this relatively low price point, since factory waterproofing often leaves much to be desired.

Setup was quite simple and pretty quick.I set it up alone during the at-home shake down, but had my fiancée to help at the campsite over the weekend.It does go a little faster with two, but it's very doable solo.The poles are typical fiberglass with shockcord and insert into sleeves on the tent; I would have preferred clip-on hooks rather than sleeves so the tent can be erected after you bend the poles individually, but for the price of this tent it's acceptable.

The tent itself is composed mostly of screen material with a door on one side and a small zip open vent on the other.If you want any kind of privacy at all, the rain fly needs to be on the tent at all times.The floor of the tent is made up of heavy duty plastic tarp material and looks like it will hold up well if taken care of.The floor of the tent is large enough for a Intex® Camp Air Bed with Pump with about a foot of room to spare on two edges if you push it into the corner.With a smaller air mattress or just sleeping bags you would easily have room for a substantial amount of gear if you kept it to two full-size occupants.

The rain fly goes over the tent and covers it pretty much to the ground.There are no windows, save the entryway and a small ventilation opening opposite, but it's not really big enough to be considered a window.Don't expect to have much of a view from inside the tent.The rain fly attaches by hooks at the corners of the tent (rings where the tent poles attach) and hook-and-loop strips which wrap around the poles to keep it aligned.The system works pretty well, but could certainly be better, though that would raise the price of the tent.

One of the key features of the tent, at least for my application, is the vestibule.This was a rather important item for me as I bought this tent for family camping and wanted to be able to put a porta-potty nearby for my fiancée and three year old daughter to use in the night without traipsing all about the wilderness.I haven't actually used it for this yet, as the campground we stayed at had facilities very nearby, but based on the amount of space it should work out fine.Aside from the potty, it also makes an idea place to store shoes and any wet items that shouldn't come into the tent itself.We had a small (15 gal) tote and a couple pairs of shoes out there and still had more than enough room to get in and out of the tent.There is no floor in the vestibule, but I remedied that by getting a ground cloth that was a bit larger than the footprint of the tent and using the excess to form the floor.Works great and helps keep the inside of the tent free of dirt and mud while keeping your shoes nice and dry.

Our first night out in the tent it thunder stormed pretty hard; we were confined to the tent for almost an hour and were unable to converse with our friends (in their tent no more than 10' away) over the rain, even when shouting.The tent held up to it great, though how much of that is due to the tent and how much the extra waterproofing I can't say.There were a couple of very small drips, but nothing that would have ruined our night had it continued raining.I intend to touch up the waterproofing before our next outing in two weeks and this should solve the drips, hopefully.VERY impressed with this tent in wet conditions, overall.

One thing to be aware of is that the entry into the vestibule is relatively low and somewhat small.I am average height (67" 170 lbs) and had no trouble getting in and out, but someone a bit larger and/or less spry might have problems getting in and out.

A couple of issues:

The stakes are cheap aluminum and will bend if you are trying to drive them into hard soil.I bought a 4 pack of nail-style steel stakes and used them for the corners of the tent and they worked out fine.I will be getting a few more to use for staking out the vestibule and the guy lines for the rain fly as well, but for light-duty camping in good weather and soft soil you might be able to get away with the cheap factory stakes.

There is a small pole that holds the ventilation opening open that I had trouble with as it kept popping through the grommet meant to hold it in place.Not a big deal, and only took a second to fix, but annoying none-the-less.I'll rig something up to prevent this next time we go out, should be a simple matter of a small washer or a swatch of cloth.

Overall I am very happy with the tent, especially since I found mine on sale.It has a few quirks, but will work for me until I save up enough for a nicer tent and probably a while after that too.It sets up and packs away easily and would be difficult to beat for the price.Don't forget to waterproof, it is VERY VERY worth the time and money to keep yourself (and your stuff) dry.

Coleman WeatherMaster Screened 6 Tent Review

I've camped for many years, first as a Girl Scout and then as an adult.My husband had never camped, let alone in a tent.I took him out in this tent to a National Forest campground in the Shenendoah mountains, and it rained steady for a week.This tent saved the vacation.The middle room served as our dining and rec center, providing ample space for our small camp table where we ate and played cards.The screened porch was a perfect vestibule, and on sunny days it's a great place to relax, nap, read and escape from the bugs.The sleeping room is perfect for two adults and a queen-sized air bed.The middle room will comfortably sleep an entire family, or serve as the "living room", gear room, work room, etc.It has a high ceiling with a loop for hanging a light.The over-cover and Coleman construction make this the driest tent I've ever experienced.After a week of steady rain, not one seep, weep or drip.

Coleman Hooligan 2 Backpacking Tent Review

I purchase this tent and used it the next day. The good: Lots of interior room, enough for 2 adults and 2 small backpacks. I was even able to fit a queen size coleman inflatable mattress inside(At home to test it)with room to spare. Very easy to set up, I read the instructions and timed myself, it took me 10 minutes. With screen mesh all around it was very comfortable, even with the Texas summer heat. Comes with a 5 year warranty. The bad: At 6 pounds Is a little on the heavy side for most solo backpackers(I personally don't mind the weight in exchange for all the room). The tent isn't free standing, make sure to get good stakes for hard or rocky ground. It didn't rain when I used it, so I can't comment on how waterproof it is, but I always seal the seams on all my tents as soon as I buy them.

Selecting a Tent
Fortunately, there are all kinds of tents for weekend car campers, Everest expeditions, and everything in-between. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
Expect the Worst
In general, it's wise to choose a tent that's designed to withstand the worst possible conditions you think you'll face. For instance, if you're a summer car camper in a region where weather is predictable, an inexpensive family or all purpose tent will likely do the trick--especially if a vehicle is nearby and you can make a mad dash for safety when bad weather swoops in! If you're a backpacker, alpine climber or bike explorer, or if you like to car camp in all seasons, you'll want to take something designed to handle more adversity.
Three- and Four-Season Tents
For summer, early fall and late spring outings, choose a three-season tent. At minimum, a quality three season tent will have lightweight aluminum poles, a reinforced floor, durable stitching, and a quality rain-fly. Some three-season tents offer more open-air netting and are more specifically designed for summer backpacking and other activities. Many premium tents will feature pre-sealed, taped seams and a silicone-impregnated rain-fly for enhanced waterproofness.
For winter camping or alpine travel, go with a four season model. Because they typically feature more durable fabric coatings, as well as more poles, four-season tents are designed to handle heavy snowfall and high winds without collapsing. Of course, four-season tents exact a weight penalty of about 10 to 20 percent in trade for their strength and durability. They also tend to be more expensive.
Domes, Tunnels and Sacks
Tents are broadly categorized into two types, freestanding, which can stand up on their own, and those that must be staked down in order to stand upright. Freestanding tents often incorporate a dome-shaped design, and most four-season tents are constructed this way because a dome leaves no flat spots on the outer surface where snow can collect. Domes are also inherently stronger than any other design. Meanwhile, many three-season models employ a modified dome configuration called a tunnel. These are still freestanding, but they require fewer poles than a dome, use less fabric, and typically have a rectangular floor-plan that offers less storage space than a dome configuration. Many one and two-person tents are not freestanding, but they make up for it by being more lightweight. Because they use fewer poles, they can also be quicker to set up than a dome.
Size Matters
Ask yourself how many people you'd like to fit in your fabric hotel now and in the future. For soloists and minimalists, check out one-person tents. If you're a mega-minimalist, or if you have your eye on doing some big wall climbs, a waterproof-breathable bivy sack is the ticket. Some bivy sacks feature poles and stake points to give you a little more breathing room. Also, if you don't need bug protection and you want to save weight, check out open-air shelters.
Families who plan on car camping in good weather can choose from a wide range of jumbo-sized tents that will accommodate all your little ones with room to spare. A wide range of capacities is also available for three- and four-season backpacking and expedition tents. Remember, though, the bigger the tent you buy, the heavier it will be, although it's easy to break up the tent components among several people in your group. It's also helpful to compare the volume and floor-space measurements of models you're considering.

Coleman Sundome Tent (10-Feet x 10-Feet) Review

This is a review as well as some suggestions for the other reviewers.

1) The rainfly does cover the windows if you align it / center it correctly.

2) It has excellent vetntilation.The cealing does not have a closeable nylon covers inside the tent.This is because it is a 3 season tent.If you were able to close it to keep dust out you would find that the tent would be wet from condensation inside on the inside.So the cealing is mesh to let warm air and moisture excape.The rainfly keeps moisture out.

If the cealing had zipper covering over the mesh,it would be a 4 season tent useable in winter.

The tent sets up easy and served us well in our first weekend camoing in it.We did not get any real rain so I cant comment on its waterproof effectiveness.But it is gaurenteed waterproof.

I love the headroom and the zippers opperated smoothly without a snag.

I used this tent 6 times this year already.One night it rained very hard.The tent was amazing as not one drop on either of us throught the entire storm.I honestly thought that we were going to get wet.This tent does what it says.Update 2009

Ok it is now 2009, the rainfly ripped last year but Coleman sent me a new replacement at no charge. Suggestion, you don't need to tighten the 2 side rain fly cords so tight just enough so they are away from the tent. You should however tighten the 4 corner rain fly cords snug, this help keep the rainflt and tent stable and keep pressure off the 2 side rain fly cords where rips occurred. Follow this and you should not tear your rain fly. It rained all weekend while camping this weekend. 2 nights very hard and not a drop on us. third season and the tent still has no issues. I really like this tent.
I would confidently buy another Coleman tent. Don

Coleman WeatherMaster Screened 4 Tent Review

An excellent tent for the price.

Easy for one person to put up, but because of the height of the tent, the rain fly is a bit difficult to get in place. Also, the eight rain fly tie down lines tend to get tangled up. I have found that unless there are extremely high wind conditions, you really don't need them, so I just coiled them up and secured them with wire ties.

It has withstood one very heavy rainfall with no noticeable leakage. More than I can say for any other tent I have used.

Ventilation is great. Plenty of screened panels that can be opened. The "hinged" door is nice too. The screened room is a real plus, but it would have been even more so had they extended the tent floor to cover it too.

It is difficult to get it rolled up enough to get it back in the carrying case, but that is true of every tent I have ever owned.

Very happy with it thus far.
